The dishwasher (not code for Mrs garage-dweller) has suddenly ceased washing things properly. 2 loads ago perfect, last 2 loads crap .

Before we have to think about adding a dishwasher to this week's new washing machine delivery has anyone got any top tips for things to check?

Water is getting in to the machine and I'm pretty sure it's getting sloshed about at least a bit.

I am going to check the drains and traps.

Rinse aid and salt all ok.

We have tried usual dishwasher tabs and gel/liquid with same lack of results.

Remove the big rotating arms, and clean them out, they'll be full of soap scum.

Yes, as Nobeer says.  I soak mine monthly in white vinegar and using a nail brush, not a pleasant sight.  Also what temperature wash do you normally use?  Do you use the hottest wash at all?  Double-check salt and give it a good stir.  Is the filter definitely sitting in its correct place?

Thanks both.

Only use the Auto setting (I guess about 50-55deg).

Will double check filters, salt and have the spinny bits out in the morning.

anything sticking up and hitting the arm?

Is it draining okay or are you getting a lot of water in the bottom?

Also check your settings for rinse aid and salt, if you have them.  Try using the hottest and longest wash when its empty.  Worth using a skewer or similar in the arms in case any debris has become stuck.

Draining ok and arms not obstructed.

Will check the other bits too.

All appears ok except someone punched a hole in the quite dirty and gummed up micro filter while cleaning it.🤫

So apart from a quick eBay/Amazon purchase we're going to do a white vinegar wash and a baking soda wash and see whether that works.

garage-dweller - DO NOT use use bicarbonate of soda (baking soda) together with white vinegar.  Try using two bowls of vinegar - place one in the middle of the top and the other in the bottom with machine on highest temperature and longest programme.

Good luck!

C-g

Thanks. Didn't intend to put in together - although that could have been fun in a destructive kind of way 💥💥💥 - the plan was sequential washes (Mrs gd's idea from her internet research).

Alongside all the above, if it has had any lard / oil / general fatty residue on the contents, there is a fair change the plastic maze thing inside will be gunged up to high heaven. Can't remember what it is called but they are usually on one side of the washer with pipes going into the bottom of them from filler and the drain.

Dishwashers are a pain tbh. I've cleaned and flushed ours more times than I care to remember as kids think its ok to put plates and pans that need rinsing first in.

If there is a hole in the filter that would allow food debris into spinning arms which would block the little holes when the water is being pushed through, so if no water in arms you wouldn't necessarily be able to tell the little holes are blocked. A couple of washes with new filter remove arms and rinse any remaining debris out (of arms)which can be awkward to get every last bit out but worth the trouble. Hope this makes sense.

Nothing worse than a mug or plate out the dishwasher that smells like dog breath, i  don't know why they come with settings as mine is always on its hottest setting. Bosch eco friendly needs almost licked clean plates and pans need hand washed
