Back in the day, diesel fumes were black and smoky and smelly. Nowadays my wife's car 1.8 Ford Zetec diesel smells very different. As did the previous diesel she had, a 1.9 Passat. has there been a change to the fuels? Or something else? I'm about to buy a diesel BingoBongo- do I need to be aware of anything in particular?

The fuel, the engines, the exhaust lots have changed. Petrols use to reek to of petrol and have loads of white fumes and often liquid spilling out the exhaust, not so now.

There have been HUGE changes to diesel engine designs in the past 10 years to make them cleaner. DPFs cut down emitted soot to almost zero, NOx emissions down dramatically fro
EGR etc, and new injection strategies to make them run more smoothly. A decent diesel engine can now be virtually indistinguishable from a petrol engine

speed12 yup - I would go as far as to say a modern diesel engine is better than the petrol equivalent in most applications.

I always loved the smell of diesel, back in the day...

I remember the clatter of my neighbour's ten year old diesel Escort starting up on cold mornings. I don't miss that.

I remember my neighbour's over revving petrol engine with the choke out in the cold mornings. I don't miss that.

Ther only problem with modern diesels is the EGR valving that they're now using to return a lot of the exhaust fumes back into the engine for reburning. The valve will invariably fail after about 3-4 years on most engines (Vauxhall, Volvo, Ford, Fiat & Citrtoen are all ones that i'm aware of) if used only for town or local driving. also pumping all the fumes back into the engine to be burnt again can't be doing it much good either.

In the vast majority of cases blanking off the EGR valve, while illegal, actually improves performance and economy.

Haver never cared for the smell of diesel and marine diesel makes me puke but I once new a girl who worked in a car showroom who enjoyed inhaling the fumes when they were manouevering the cars in-and-out.

Each to their own eh
