MegaSack DRAW - This year's winner is user - rgwb
We will be in touch
In the millionth thread I've started I *think* I've narrowed the field. I know a few folk have gone down buying a handset with a rolling contract but after lots of number crunching I can't see any financial benefit and although can change my mind, I'm not sure why I would? Plus I need to shell out a lump sum at the outset.
So I've decided the desire s and desire hd are within budget (can get either with £25 contracts and limited/unlimited data through carphone warehouse) It's not really clear which is 'better' because most online reviews just compare the stats (the s has newer OS and the hd has a bigger screen and bit more storage) but anyone used both for a real world comparison? ta
I have had a quick go on my friends desire s which was running 2.3. Compared to my defy it looked modern and felt sturdy. As for the os improvements and the sense overlay compared to my 2.1 blur (soon to be 2.2) it was similar. Some differences with the menus etc. front facing camera on the s ,but how much it'd be used I'm not sure.. Processor is better than the defy but I doubt it'd be noticed unless playing games.
Not tried a hd!
Just buy one and try not worry too much about os stuff.
Rick.
remember it is a computer it is out of date the moment you buy it.
Desire HD has a better main camera, the S has an additional front-facing camera.
The HD is physically bigger and heavier than the S to accommodate a larger screen, but despite the 'HD' moniker they're actually both the same resolution.
Desire S has a nominally larger battery.
That's about it. Performance wise they're as close to identical as makes no odds. Personally, I don't give a toss about cameras and would consider smaller to be better, so together with the better battery the Desire S wins on all counts for me.

yeah I know, dual cores are coming soon (but are way out of my budget) but just want as close to the front as i can afford
i think you could be right cougar, i'm not too fussed about the extra screen size and i think ergonomic is better, plus has 2.3 platform already
I would physically hold the hd before committing, as it is a fair bit larger and heavier than the others. It's much less comfortable on the pocket/shirt than the others too...
DrP
i'll go handle them but looks like desire s will be better option for me
now it's a question of whether to go with talkmobile with unlimited data or o2 with 1 gb tinterwebness. Talk mobile covergae seems bit worse than o2
O2, then.
1Gb is plenty, I'm a geek and I'd have to try pretty hard to use half of that.
desire s doesn't come out that well here

lad at work got rid of his iPhone4 and got a nexus S from the carphone warehouse, he's pretty happy with it.
yeah i've read in a few places it's not a huge improvement over the desire but the sensation will be the all singing all dancing htc and i won't be able to afford that 🙁
(nexus is out of price range too)
I would definitely go with the Desire S.
A better version of the awesome Desire.
(I do have a desire, so this might be a touched biased...)
What about having a look at GiffGaff.
Runs on the O2 network, and the tariffs are cheap.
8p/min calls and 4p texts
Also for £10 a month you can get a goodybag with 250 minutes, unlimited texts and unlimited data.

I've got and have had the Desire HD for about 7months i have med size hands and find the size no probs.
Depends what you want from a phone and also how much of a geek you are.
By that i mean the 4.3" screen makes browsing the net etc IMO much easier and better and video playback pics etc are superb.
Also reguards the geek bit i've unlocked my Desire HD and am running a custom rom (its actually really simple to do) so already have access to the latest software for which battery life etc is much much better than stock.
The Desire S as mentioned doesn't have as big a screen (by far the biggest battery drain) and has a larger battery so is going to last battery wise a fair bit longer...
So depends what your after but both IMO superb phones...
i think s might suit me because a) not got anything to compare it to and b) not planning to stream stuff so ca prob live without bigger screen
i'll pop into town tomorrow if places are open and try them both
I have large-ish hands and find the desire screen too narrow quite often for typing on. The fat pads of my fingers often touch the wrong key making it very frustrating ( iphones seem to have a MUCH better keyboard setup )
I spent a good bit of time in the shop the other day with the Desire HD. the slightly wider screen made for typing being more reliable / accurate. The screen was large, but as already said, its really a noticably larger phone all round.
I also noticed that the HD's screen wasn't quite as good as my desires sLCD one ... seemed a little washed out compared to mine, but i think the reality is its all but as good as you'll get at that size at the moment.
fisha, try the slide-it app. There is a free version, after the trial ended I found tapping the keys infuriatingly slow, so coughed up a fiver to buy the full version. Can type almost as quickly as on a proper keyboard.
i have little hands 🙁

There's more alternative Android keyboards than your current keyboard has letters; if you don't like the one you've got, try another?
Swype is great and free.
Thought about the Samsung Galaxy S2 ??? Being released in the next week or so... that will be 'in date' for a [s]month[/s] week or so. Good initial reviews. That's where i'm going to from my trusted HTC Desire
yeah but there's no danger i'll stretch to that sort of money, i know tech moves quickly but i'd at least like to have as close to the coal face as i can afford
You should be able to pick it up for about £30pcm after the initial rush.... not like an iphone where they set the price per month and thats that!
