'get back to her own country'.

I'll tackle this one though....JG was totally allowed to say "go back to your own country" to someone who LIVES IN A DIFFERENT COUNTRY.

Totally diff story if she's said it to a British Asian. But the DIDNT.

WTF has the world gone mad??

RIP JG

Stunning, a whole nation and it's people offended by a litle man and his joke

WTF Are you on about? There's this thread and a yahoo "news" release. hardly a whole nation offended.

I consider it racist, I'm not offended, I just think it's not on. Of course it's OK for Asians/whatever to take the piss out of their own race BoardinBob - that is entirely different. The joke was racist because it's at the expense of a minority that have and still do suffer racism. It also being a word play does not change that.

But JG was too stupid to know where Shilpa Shetty came from. And the 'get back to your own country' is one of the racists favourite phrases isn't it?

Anyway I'm not in the position really to comment on whether the 'joke' was racist or not, to me it isn't but then again I don't have any experience of direct racism.

"I'm a ****, what do you think I've done? I've opened a corner shop"

Yes, and he has the right to say that...it shows he has some kind of sense of humour about his background and obviously feels comfortable enough to share his humour with you, perhaps to make you feel more at home with him. It's like when I share an Irish joke with my good friends - and I've told plenty of them on here. This kind of banter that goes on between friends is not black and white (oops, see what I did there?). Just because I tell an Irish joke to some of my good mates (and I include this forum as a place with which to share humour with "friends"), it doesn't suddenly give all and sundry a chance to lob up to me and make out I'm a thick eejit, running around drunk with a pig under my arms.

Context is very important in these matters and usually, we're all intelligent enough to judge each situation when they arise...obviously David Jason wasn't feeling too clever when he chose to tell his joke.

Indeed.

This was a person who asked if "East Angular" was abroad when she was on BB originally.

Plenty of cracks about us Scots on here. I don't know anyone that's taken offense to that?

Its hard to define this as racist IMHO, given there are different views on what racism is. The joke doesn't imply that David Jason feels he is superior to a ****stani cloakroom attendant. Clearly there is a scale of racism, where this starts is debatable, and weather the joke is on the scale at all or low on it, is again debatable.

get back to your own country

The implication is racist I think even if literally not a problem in this case.

As for DJ - it's a stereotype sort of a joke which isn't helpful in a society that tries to be inclusive. If I was in India and people refered to be as John Smith, or whatever, I think I might find it a bit off. I do find it funny when Brits are portrayed as tea drinking toffs or cockney barrow boys though...maybe I wouldn't if in India though.

Wouldn't you think that there's a rich history of piss-taking between those who are north and south of the border - I'd say it's fairly tit for tat and it doesn't actually come from any deep-seated feelings of racial superiority on either's behalf....again, context, context, context.

You tightarse!

Jeez, "t i t" doesn't make it through the swear filter?

cynic-al I was trying? to be sarcastic.

In my little world it ain't racist unless it's intended to be, and I'm guessing DJ was'nt intending to offend. If the same 'joke' came out of the mouth of say a BNP member I'd then agree it was rasist.
A bit like the diference between manslaughter and murder.

I've just walked over to my mate Sahid (aka "Asian Invasion") across the corridor from me and told him the joke. He laughed at it. In fact he laughed at it a lot. I'm not expecting to be hauled up in front of the uber politically correct HR any minute soon.

Well spotted Gary, maybe you have got a sense of humour after all

I dont want to fall out with anymore STW folk, I know I have my haters but I aint a flippin nazi white supremacist either

The lefties on here have gotta understand that any opinions which conflict with their own "Socialist World Order" notions doesnt automatically make them a Nazi, but then I guess you know that anyhow and the stream of accusations are simply subterfuge

(answers on a postcard)

You give yourself far too much credit. I doubt most people really care what you think.

(Is still amused to see the pointless bickering, over a storm in a teacup, continuing. Toddles off to see what's in the fridge...)

Cripes, it's still going on.

This is really easy.

- It's a hopeless joke, pitiful.
- Quite a lot of people regard it as mildly off colour.
- No-one will be disappointed if it is never told on the radio again.
- The right to tell it on the radio is not worth fighting for.

Walk away. Think of a funny joke that everyone will enjoy. Tell it. Watch people laugh.

🙂

Awesome isn't it. I particularly enjoy it when it degrades into personal mud slinging when someone takes themselves too seriously to notice levity staring them in the face.

I think you will find it is racist either in its own right or according to the effect it has - intent is nothing.

So a cop who stops and searches all black folk he sees is not being racist? Bernard Manning is not racist with his "jokes" Neither of them intend to be racist.

You'll be waiting a very very long time indeed. Seriousness is very difficult to extract from me, coming in naturally short supply. I see it as a good thing, especially where spurious arguments on the internet are concerned.

No doubt you consider your argument won by now.

Rudeboy - racist joke or not?

I thought someone who has experienced racism might be able to give some insight.

The notion that only people of asian/afro carib/celtic/many other origins can experience racism, is complete nonsense. I'm blue eyed, fair haired and of anglo appearance and believe me, I've been called a white **** before now, for no good reason. So if a view from someone who has experienced racism is required, this could be gleaned from anyone. It would be racialy stereotypical to imagine that only people of non caucasian ethnicity could provide that experience. To say that all people of ethnic origin are automatically victims that need protection is extremely patronising and every bit as racially stereotypical as the usual overt racism that the thread is supposedly adressing.

Gary_M Vs enfht

(Pss, $10 bucks on Gary to win)

Everyone can point the finger: Blacks, gays, sex, whites, castes, creeds and even religion.

We can all be guilty and we have to know when to draw the line.

Thing is the society is split between educated and idiots-both make mistakes.

Maybe instead of rascism we should just use the word "prejudiced" as it targets a larger group rather than just ethnic or colour.

Crap joke though David Jason besides ****stanis don't use Mahatma dumbass.

Wow, wonderfully offensive. End of debate, play on words, funny or not is up to the beholder but racist? No chance!

Thank you trailmonkey, for making exactly the point I was going to make. Many times the accusation of racism is made by white people on behalf of other races, when those other races probably wouldn't even notice, let alone care. That is patronising and sanctimonious, and there are a number posting on this thread. Run along to the Life Shop, folks, I understand they have a sale on.

He rushes in to give us the perfect moral standpoint but appears to be nothing but a worse racist in the process.

"The ethical dwarf, posturing on the moral high ground, presents a ludicrous spectacle"
That quote, used to describe Saint Tony, could just as easily apply to plenty of other people on here.

I have met and ridden with TandemJeremy and I wouldn't imagine for one second that he would bear ill will to anyone, especially on account of the colour of their skin. I wouldn't go anywhere near describing him as a racist. The comments were racially stereotypical though and I'm sure on reflection, TJ could see how they are being interpreted that way.

Anyone that complains about, or worse, pretends to be offended by, a harmless wee joke like that really needs to get out more.

I don't pretend to be offended by jokes about Scots. I even make plenty myself. Grow up people.

Thank you trailmonkey ( whoever you are in real life) 🙂

I don't mind at all it being pointed out that what I said was daft or stupid or did not mean to others what I intended it to mean as in this case. sloppy thinking and posting from me.
As I am of english descent with a poncy english accent and living in Scotland most of my life I too have been on the wrong end of predjudice.

I object strongly to being called a racist.
