I see that unfortunately the Belgian international footballer Gregory Mertins has died following heart failure during a match.

Seems to be a relatively high number of deaths from heart failure in football at the elite level.

What do you think is behind it?

I hope to hell that it's not what caused a spike in deaths in cycling a few years back.

Sorry, going to have to be that guy, and ask for the stats to back that up.

Edit: To do my own piss poor research:

20 association footballers in last 15 years across the world have been attributed to heart issues:

A college mate of mine died at 24 playing 5 a side from heart failure.

Does it have to be at the elite level, or maybe just one of those things?

Possibly hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (thickening of the heart walls) - repeated and intense training at that level can make it worse?

I think recently they've introduced screening processes for footballers.

Are they all that fit though? I read somewhere that their VO2/max is on average 55/60 ml/kg/min - that is less than mine and I'm not all that fit.

SADS. It appears in many sports at different levels and the cause isn't always obvious. Seems it could be the exertion of the heart is the final push but hard to say what is behind it.

Yes they are - have you ever played a proper competitive game of football?

Are the professional athletes fit? Tough call but, I think I will go, just, on balance, with yes.

EPO?

Do footballers have a Haemocrit level for competition?

It looks worse stating the amount of deaths amongst footballers, but the pool of footballers around the world is so huge that it can look a bit skewed when comparing to other sports which far, far less people play.

Quite a few years ago a clubmate of mine, and an international runner, died in his sleep after winning two races in the same weekend. These things just happen!

They used to limit the top cog for kids to a 15 to avoid this kind of thing....how do you implement a similar thing for running?

Am i talking out my ring?
