I'm off up to Bowness in a couple of weeks. I've never so much as been to the SE Lakes before, so can anyone recommend me any must-do walks in the vicinity please? I won't be taking my bike unfortunately 😐

Any suggestions for bad weather activities also much appreciated.

Foot ferry then nice walk up to Claife Heights and down via the tarns to Sawrey for buns and tea.

Fairfield Horseshoe would be the best day walk in the closish area, I would have thought.

Get out of Bowness would be my first priority... For bad weather theres the aquarium of the lakes on the opposite shore but its a bit carp.

From Bowness you can walk westwards along the Dales Way. It's a nice low/medium-level rolling walk and well signposted and Ok if the weather is not so good. Going as far as Stavely will take 4-5 hours, have lunch in Wilf's cafe (or the Eagle and Child), then drool over the bikes in Wheelbase and go to the Brewery (or the Eagle and Child). When you're done, train back to Windermere is a couple of quid - train is frequent and reliable.

... or take the boat to Ambleside and do the Troutbeck Wansfell loop.

Boat or bus to Ambleside and a walk over Loughrig terrace to Grassmere for lunch and a stroll back on the opposite side of the valley.

If the weather is truly nasty there is always the cinema in Ambleside.

Great, thanks everyone - lots of options there. I'll make sure I pack my wellies! And save Bond or The Program to watch at the cinema just in case.

It's 6 miles to Staveley from Windermere. Nice walk and not too boggy. You can come back a slightly different route via Ings (Good pub with own brewery)which is 4-5 miles. Quiet paths. Good views.

If you head over to Claife on the ferry call in here-

http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/claife-viewing-station-and-windermere-west-shore/

There's also Wray Castle & the Beatix Potter place up the road at Hill Top..

If the weathers bad (or not) then Blackwell up at Stoors is worth a visit, the cafes not bad either..

http://www.blackwell.org.uk

There's walks in some of those links, or have a look here for other things to do-

Nice one thanks hedgehog. I'm a big William Morris fan so Blackwell looks like a definite.

Beatrix Potter, maybe not so much 😉 . Although I can imagine the girlf being quite up for that!

You're on holiday so the publican is allowed to trump the author! 😉

If you don't mind a short drive out the short walk up Gummers How is worth a look, then (if your budget allows) call in at the Masons Arms or the Swan at Newbey Bridge for food/drink.

If you caught the bus up to Ambleside or Grasmere there's some good options for walking back if you fancy a full day out.. I'd say if you can try & include the walk over Claife Heights past the tarns in at some point..

For more of the country house thing have a look at Townend-

&
Sizergh-

I hope the weather is good for you!

Haha, thanks again hedgehog, I really appreciate the local insight 🙂 .

November 4th and 5th so I'm not holding out too much hope for the weather, but you never know. Maybe we'll have a bit of snow by then.
