😀 got to love January and time to go mad in Argentina and Chile 😆 hope this thing goes well, it is gorgeous,

Peterhansel in a Peugeot will be interesting. I think a Mini will win with Robby Gordon providing the fireworks.

Got to be Coma in the bikes

Is it Eurosport only again? Probably the thing I miss most since dumping Sky. Couldn't afford Sky so committed to not paying for online subscriptions either. Time to scour the listings.

I don't think it is on Eurosport, at least I cannot see reference to the times it is shown 🙁

The Dakar website shows only French stations.

I am keen to watch it if I can find where to do so

Yes to dakar 🙂 least this rig im off to work on has sky 🙂

I had issues last year with the eurosport player - despite my parents sitting watching it on their sky i was sitting at my house with ****ing snooker or some shit on the player app- whats that all about - the digi guide said it should be dakar !

Ended up watching the highlights the next day on the eurosport on demand service

Looks like it's on Eurosport at 10pm, 10:30 on Sunday. Only a half hour show though, and wiped out completely if the snooker overruns. Although it is repeated at various times in the small hours and on Eurosport 2.

Peugeots not going as well as hoped.

Not good about the polish bike rider Hernik , have they released what happened yet ? I know they said found dead on course yesterday.

The "my dakar " snippets on eurosport are very good this year - i guess go pros or something , shows just how ****ing mental these guys are , total respect, certainly dont think boorman was just being a whiney git when he had a go.

cracking race so far with the real pros showing the young guns the way. sam sunderland wins first stage ny a mile only to be made to look foolish as he then has to run firston the longeststageof the rally and promptly gets lost for two and a half hours.. meanwhile coma does his tortoiase and hare gameplan and is happy to come in the top three every day and avoids been first on the road. the peugeot bubble must have burst big time.. despre clearly is no where near the speed of even the top 5 SP is struggling with it and el matador is wringing its neck to get top three daily placings.

love the coverage this year, balanced time on each class especialy the quads.

cant help but feel organisers have made some questionable route planning.. 500 km relaxed section starting at 4.20 am with 300km stage starting at noon in 40 degree temperatures? literally a killer. far too many distressing scenes of dehydration when they absolutely could be avoided.

how can a bike rider dress in one day for 5 degrees to 40 degrees temperature range..

I have missed most of it through being mad busy at work.

Sainz hit a biker, I really hope that is the not the one that died.

Spot on about Sunderland IMO he is a bit of a twit.

Will catch up tonight.

Coverage is excellent as usual and I agree that the stage lengths are bonkers for some reason this year.
Great to see the 'Beetle' still going - I wonder if the chip van is racing this year?

Sam sunderlands oooot.

Collar bone and shoulder after a tumble in the rocks on day 4

One of the other brit bikers who sold his house to go on the dakar is out with a broken hand

Barrada is toying with coma.

Carlos sainz is out. 3am finish on wednesday after a blown turbo on the pug left him with very little power to limp home.
Then out tired yesderday he rolled the pug and game over

Dupres havinga nightmare with the pug too , he was stuck at the side of the road yesterday also.

Proper excellent stuff in the dunes last night..... it's like another planet.
How the hell they cover all those km day in day out and then have the energy to pick their bike up in the sand is beyond me.

More so the privateers self supporting/spannering as they said on the show- the real heros.

If you havnt read boormans aco**** of the dakar , its actually a worth while read imo. Hes not a whiney sod like macgregor ( i tried to read long way down off the back of the dakar and failed) and seems to be able to write in an entertaining way,

Is anyone having the same problems as me recording the Dakar on Eurosport ..... last nights was overrun by over an hour of snooker .. so even setting extra time I missed it completely.

Not much in the way of re-runs either !

Snooker overruns every year and messes up recordings, I can't see why Sky, having it set to "automatic" before/after the show, don't adjust it if something else overruns, the best thing that I can find to do is to set it to 10 mins before & after, sometimes it still misses part of it 🙁

I did notice there is a repeat on around 1am though.

I think riding across the salt lake will cause a lot of problems both electrical & mechanical.Certainly seems to have scuppered Honda's chances..

Sky users, search Dakar on the planner and select both showings of the Dakar on Eurosport. If it overruns one it automatically reschedules to not overrun the 2nd. I had one recording that was just snooker and another that was 48 mins long which recorded the snooker and all the Dakar.

It's being a cracking race this year and I'm loving every minute of it. Carlton Kirby is an excellent, poignant, passionate commentator. Just seeing the scenery is staggering it makes me want to get another touring bike.

So then we are enough into it for some bets to be called. Who wins what?

I'm going for
borreda
Sonik
De villeins
Any kamaz

Here's what one of the mechanics had to say;

John texted a series of updates from the end of Stage 8 last night - here they are:

"Just spoke with HRC mechanic and loads of bikes suffering with electrical problems due to salt water in the connectors...

...Plus the KTM downpipes were building up a big layer of dry salt around them as they ride"

"Many bikes electrics have been ruined by the salt water - especially EFi bikes...

...KTM truck has run out of new wiring looms!"

"Clayton out after 100km with a dead motor."

"Finished [Mikaels?] bike at 2am... loads of corroded connectors - fork seals shot - chain and sprokets like they have been soaked in acid*...

...Loads of bikes still out there, and many nearly dead bikes in the bivvy tonight."

"2 of the Turkish lads in... others still waiting at the start of the special for first light before attempting the last 40km dunes."

"Lots of engine changes tonight - many have corroded intake valves!!!"

JM.

* John points out that the salt lake was brine (alkaline) of course, but the effects were much the same...

they could of course properly waterproof with rubber and vaseline and ride slower.. but far too many seem to think its a race.. when getting thier is the target.

i know laia sanz from her trials days at the ssdt and shes showing a lot of daft lads how to do it.. and could finish top honda rider.. smooth steady is the way..

That's a wrap, Coma wins the bikes and a Mini wins the cars 😆

The beetle didn't make it, got as far as Stage 10

That huge crash was 😯
