I may well be relocated to Brizzle later this year so I'm looking at the cycle commute options - as well as other stuff. Work will be around Filton and the housing choices may well be Emerson's Green in Mangotsfield (I know, biggest estate etc) or Long Ashton on the South side. Is Long Ashton to Filton possible / sustainable? What about other aspects (non perm, house costs to me same for each location)? Cheers.

Bradley Stoke is close to Filton with lots of rented housing available.

Long Ashton is lovely, Emmersons Green is a sh*thole. IMO. Long Ashton to Filton is a reasonable distance but easily do-able, anotherdeadhero on here does that commute every day and can fill you in on best route etc.

Mangotsfield and Emersons Green are only around 3 miles or so depending on which part you live in / need to travel too. Both are pretty good. Houses in Mangotsfield are about 50-60 years old and Emersons Green is not a huge estate and around about 10 years old.

Bradley Stoke is about the same distance from Filton and is a HUGE estate that has been growing since it was started about 20 years ago.

Long Ashton to Filton is about 10 miles each way but you either have to fight the Bristol traffic (not very nice) or use the Bristol - Bath cycle path - the first couple of miles at the Bristol end can be a bit risky though.

Emersons is not a sh*thole, it's not lovely but theres plenty of money there and the local school is among the best in Bristol (I don't live on the estate BTW).
I'm yet to find any local riding and Long Ashton is close to Ashton court (but that's crap, I never ride there).
Mangotsfield is also close to motorways(M4 and M5) and the ring road.
There is a dedicated cycle lane which runs through mangotsfield and goes about as far as Filton Abbey Wood (MOD), so it's quite a safe commute (I do it often). I'd probably avoid bradley stoke AKA Sadly broke.
I think Mangotsfield is quite a pleasant place, no gangs of kids, graffiti etc. Plenty of greenery nearby. If you have a choice, try to move into the village rather than EG, there's plenty of character.
Oh, takes me 40 odd mins to reach cwmcarn and 1hr15 to reach Afan. I go to one of these every weekend.

Ok, sh*thole may be slightly harsh, however Emmersons Green is a large sprawling modern estate with few facilities (I live fairly centrally in Bristol so I mean comparatively) and no soul and that's not my cup of tea at all. However if you like modern estate houses I'm sure it's a pleasant enough place to live. Would go for Long Ashton anyday personally.

Fair enough mate, I've always preferred the 'burbs. It's quiter with fewer drunks. I do agree with your comment about new housing estates though, but as they go EG is one of the better ones in Briz.
Personally, i find the cliftonites etc a bunch of snobs, I just couldn't bare being surrounded by them.
Completely depends what you want, quiet suburb-EG.
Central, lively hussle and bussle-LA.
Tootall, if you want any help with EG mail me at ndobbsieATmsnDOTcom.

Unless you are pretty traffic brave I would not fancy commuting from Long Ashton as it is through a mass of city traffic, plus the faily brutal climb you will need to up to Clifton/Downs level. I drive across that way in the car sometimes (only biked it once and really did not like the traffic even in non rush hour) and I have no recallof much in the way of cycle paths. The Bristol bath path is quite a diversion I would think, plus risky for various attacks near the inner city.

I would suggest renting in Bradley Stoke, Stoke Gifford, Winterbourne, somewhere off the a38/Gloucester road (or maybe even Yate or Thornbury if you want more rural) for a short while, to get your bearings, before comnmitting yourself to living to an area you might not like living in or communting from.

Thanks guys. There are provided houses in each location so I don't exactly get a choice but I'm trying to be educated if I get an offer at each location.

Bradley stoke is pretty bleak, but better than being run over in rush hour. Its about 20 mins car drive to Bristol Centre. There is a bus terminus in Parkway train station (Stoke Gifford, 10/15 min bike ride from Bradley stoke) so getting places is fairly easy (Bristol, Bath, Cardiff etc) and Cribbs mall is about 15 mins bike ride away. Its in easy biking distance of some nice places at the weekend if you like countryside lane type rides or a trip over to Bath.
