I'm looking at buying one of the above, most likely second hand or reconditioned.

I've used a Cubica a fair bit with 'reasonable' results but I don't know how much of an upgrade a Classic would be. If any.
Cubica seemed a bit underpowered and took some practice to get it consistent, is the classic any better?

And is there anything worth watching out for in second hand machines? I heard something about the boilers corroding in older models.

How about trying them both in a shop? Where are you based? Are you using a burr grinder? Why are there more posts about coffee makers than cycling on here? 😉

I think ill stick to my stove top though.

I thought Cubikas were around the 100 squid mark for ages. I believe the Classic has better internals (more brass bits) and is more reliable. Classic user myself here and it's been fine for ages. A descale every so often is a good idea.

It's all part of the image.
I've got the bikes, I've got the kit, now I need a coffee machine.
There are no posts about cycling because its not about cycling, its about bikes, looking cool and drinking coffee.

SO. Whilst my bike may not function properly, I want a coffee machine that does.

Reconditioned cubiKas are £90 last time I looked.
Classics are rated as 1500W as opposed to Cubika's 750W. Now more watts are obviously better, but what difference does this make? Heats up faster or has more pump power?

ps. I've got a stove top but it doesn't look the part.

i think the classic has the brass portafilter and head of the pro machines whereas the cubika is aluminium?
i may be wrong but i can't be arsed to google it for you. 🙂

This is true. Will it make my coffee taste more expensive?

if you use good coffee and know how to use the machine properly then it will taste better than anything you buy from starbucks and be a lot cheaper. a bag of quality beans is not much more than a large frappawhatsit from a coffee chain. it's not long before the machine will pay for itself.

i don't understand the problem with having excellent coffee available in your own home? a couple of hundred pounds on a half decent machine is good value compared to a boutique frame that's just a copy of a giant/specialized. 🙂

Talk about setting your sights high! Starbucks is barely a grade above nescafe, so yes it doesn't take much to get better than that.

My original question still stands:
is a Classic worth the extra compared to a Cubika?

probably, but depends of the price - picked up my cubika for the bargain basement prce of £30 plus postage - needed a damn good clean and produces consitently nice coffee (coupled with careful choice of beans and a decent grinder) - so good in fact my 18 month old seems to be developing a penchant for a tiny amount of espresso each day!

Go for Classic if you get good price. I have Classic with Rancilo Silvia steam wand mod as this gives far better microform if you plan to do some latte art ... damn latte art is so difficult.

Thanks Doc, that's the kind of thing I'm after.

latte art

errr...no.
I'm looking for 'euro espresso chic' not 'london poser camp'. So I'm not really interested in "modding my steam wand for a better microfoam" or whatever you want to call it.
