Over the past 12 months or so, my right knee has been feeling a bit crunchy. After hard exercise or a big ride, it’s slightly tender where my IT band meets the kneecap on the outside upper knee area, and if I put my hand on the inside of it and flex it, I can feel a sort of crunchy/bubbling sensation when it is fully compressed.
I don’t notice it during exercise and it’s never painful, but I’m worried it’ll get worse and hinder riding. If it’s relevant, I’m 40, eat very well, hAve never been overweight and go the gym 2-3 times a week and cycle once or twice.
Any ideas?
Cheers

You are 40. This is what its going to be like.
Crepitus. Noticed my right knee clicking when walking up the stairs and then some horrendous popping noises from both knees when I squat down. Not hurting much at the moment but can be a sign of impending arthritis. I'm 44 tomorrow. Always good to have things to look forward to!

Unlikely. The other knee is the same age and it's fine.
Try a proper sports massage to loosen quads and itb. It’s probably tightness pulling stuff out of line. My massage girl told me about one of her patients that had suffered for years and was about to have a knee op who she sorted in a couple of sessions

Same here.
Maybe one of us needs to be broken for spares.
What mac says, shit happens when yer older.
Strengthen your vastus medialis oblique or VMO on both legs. Foam roll your quads and IT bands.
Over dominant quads and a weak VMO pull the kneecap to one side causing the patella to track incorrectly and crunch (crepitus).
Crepitus.
It actually means 'fart' - but from the link above.... count your blessings maybe

Thanks guys. Certainly does sound like (de)crepitus so will give some VMO exercises a whirl.
Mine started like that when I was around 43 10 years on and it's painful most of the time. You can sit on your arse and do nothing or just carry on enjoying your life unfortunately it's all a part of getting old, there's always surgery as a last resort this doesn't guarantee you'll be mint again...
yep ..just keep going . My knees are noisy and one quite arthritic but actually getting better as I have lost weight, increased my fitness and eat a lot of turmeric! Walking several miles causes pain but cycling ..not so bad. Over the years I've used voltarol creams/ice packs/painkillers/stretches/massage etc etc but weight loss and strengthening is the best way forward imho . Crepitus is no cause for concern ( say docs) unless accompanied by pain.

Indeed - its just the name for the sound /sensation. What makes it important / unimportant is where the sound is coming from and whats causing it.
In my right knee its been nothing other than note-worthy for the past decade or so. In the tendons in my forearm it was pretty horrible and painful and needed dealing with pretty urgently - managed to get it under contol with lots of ibuprofen and being very disciplined about resting the arm but the next step if that hadn't been successful would have been setting my arm in cast to immobilise the tendons completely to try and stop the cycle if inflammation causing the crepitus and the crepitus causing inflammation.
I can’t creep up the stairs quietly anymore! Both knees. Squats have alleviated a lot of the pain for me. My surgeon says he is only going to knock me out again*,when/if my remaining cartilage jams....
* he’s fixed both knees previously
It’s one of the (few) disadvantages of keeping active into middle age. Sound effects from the joints!
I was getting similar quite a bit recently then started eating egg shell membranes and its improved scince then. Pretty easy thing to try if you happen to eat alot of eggs anyway.
