Saw someone flat out on his back on the blue trail today being given chest compressions by his mates, on speakerphone to the emergency services. It looked pretty bad, but I later heard sirens leaving the area so fingers crossed.

🙁

If anyone knows who it was I hope you can give us some good news..

Another one 🙁 Hope they're OK. Back in Sept we passed similar but the paramedics had got there by then.

Nothing on the Swinley facebook group...

It was right at the end of a section, as the trail crossed a fire-road. My first thought was 'what the f are you doing stopped in the trail' then I saw why. Quite shocking, I can only imagine what they were all feeling. He has good mates, that's all I can say. Fair play to emergency services too and the 999 woman.

I was out in Swinley last night, didn't see it myself but I think the other group were the ones who stopped.

West Sussex Police tweeted this last night;

I was gonna say that. It's like some promotional shot or something. Just needs a police car!

Didn't know there was much mountain biking near Steyning.

Indeed. I assume the poor guy caught on fire, or got stuck up a tree as a result of the crash.

this is from a couple of years ago - the trails have been extended up the hill now and there's official red blue and black routes.

Steyning is effectively on the South Downs Way.

From the BOB facebook page, it was the BOB regular weds night fast ride that happened upon another downed rider and provided CPR until the paramedics got there.

Sadly, seems like he didn't make it.

Fire service pretty much the fastest emergency response times so it might be a case of co-responding where they get there first and provide an initial basic medical response.

Well yes, but that's not what the photo is of, nor is it the Downs Link. Wwaswas confirmed there is some stuff there though.

Sadly, seems like he didn't make it.

Very sad.

Really sad to hear, thoughts out to the family.

Do you know if it was an off or a health related issue (given the CPR)? That would be the third in about a year and a half. 🙁

Gutting, I was wondering the same as razorrazoo.

Even got the chopper in the background, only noticed it on the second look.

I was lucky enough to be riding with a local group in 2013 when I went head first into a bombhole bank and broke my back. If I'd have been alone - well it don't bear thinking about.

Dangerous sport.

Sad news.

It's things like this that makes me worry. I ride mostly on my own, with a SPOT I'll admit, but still - can't press the red button if I'm out cold or in v-fib :/

Well yes, but that's not what the photo is of

As the Winston Estate (it's not really Stenying, but close) has the SDW running through it and alongside it I'd be surprised if thats not a photo of closest spot they could get motorised vehicles to on the estate land to the SDW where the rider had the accident, though it's interesting to know there is more in the area too and more the sort of riding conducive to actually hurting yourself!

Really sad news re the Swinley rider - can't see it on the BoB facebook page myself, maybe there are two.

Shit.. that's tragic... You just don't think of MTBing as a sport where you can die.

He's probably got family somewhere local too.. can't imagine how they feel this morning.

Steyning has some officially sanctioned downhill/freeride trails. Amongst the biggest jumps & drops you'll find in the south of England! Hope that rider is ok.

One of my mates riding some of the smaller stuff recently:

Very sad news about the Swinley rider. Thoughts to all affected.

"The guys name was Ben Goggin. Sadly he passed away last night. Such a shame. He was a real friendly guy."

RIP Ben.

Its terrible to loose a fellow who enjoyed the sport we all do. I hope that the people who did undertake the CPR don't feel that they lost him, but that they feel that they did their best to help him. RIP to Ben. Very sad times.

Thinking it was probably a heart attack, he was well clear of any tricky trail or obstacles.

If you've got a smartphone then there's a free St Johns Ambulance app which has procedures for lots of emergency actions including CPR. Has pictorial and audio guide as what to do. All data is in the app so can be used anywhere, no mobile signal/data required.

Apple

Android

I've got it installed on my phone.

Very sad news.
I know that there's a biker down course aimed at motorcyclists, is there anything similar for cyclists?
It wouldn't be that difficult to adapt it with a few changes, the accident management and first aid would be very applicable.
RIP Ben.

The standard first aid courses are fine for recognising and dealing with heart attacks and similar. I believe British Cycling run courses too intended for instructors, or there's other similar ones a google away.

What got me thinking after the one I witnessed was that I'd struggle to describe where we were, didn't have a contact number handy for the rangers (who are best to help guide an ambulance in), and that I usually just ride with one mate. If he collapsed, I'd be doing CPR and calling an ambulance at the same time unless someone else happened to be passing.

I do try to put some thought into those "what if" situations now, at the very least grabbing the local emergency or rangers' number if it's a trailcentre.

REC (Rescue Emergency Care) courses are aimed specifically for outdoors activities, and are pre-requisites for ML/MBLA qualifications.
I did the REC2 two-day course at Plas y Brenin and found it very good.
They also do a three-day mountain bike specific course (see http://www.pyb.co.uk/courses-first-aid.php).

The REC course adapted for mountain bikers is the course that BOB put on for their club members. Sounds like it effectively taught them what to do.

Hi, for anyone still reading this my name is zachary Goggin, the son of Ben Goggin.
Sadly the above statement is true, my dad passed away during the night while in hospital due to a blood clot in one of his arterys, my family has a known history of heart conditions and my dad (and most likely me aswell when I'm older) had stents put in place.

this heart condition was the reason he got back into cycling ( he used to be a amature cyclist with the old Woking cc before it disbanded and although I don't know what trials he won specifically I have numerous trophys in his name for fastest times or first place) unfortunately it took him before he could get fit again, (doctors said the blood clot was dislodged so it could of happened at any time)

For those of you put off cycling by this, PLEASE don't let it, my dad loved cycling almost more then me and I have grown up seeing him countless times trying to get back into it knowing fully of the risks heavy exercise could of posed to him, but he did it for the sport he loved and even though he was against all the odds that could of been thrown against him he still tried, for the sport that truly gave him enjoyment.
Thank you for reading this, if you are looking for basic first aides courses which cover cpr and all the things which can help in such cases like my dads or even save someone' else's life, St johns offers really good courses.

Thank you, and please, ride on

What a great post Zachary. Condolences to you and your family.

I've just downloaded the St. John ambulance app as recommended earlier in the thread. Hope I never need it, but it might give me a bit more confidence or a prompt if I'm ever faced with an incident.

my condolences to you and yours in this time Zac.
Lovely post, any of us who love our riding should be able to see ourselves and people like your father in those words.

And you're bang on about the first aid courses. I'm down to renew mine for free through work, everyone should just enquire with their boss to see if you can do it. Thankfully I've never had to do CPR, but i've helped people in shock, supported fractures and dressed many wounds through the knowledge gained from mine over the years
