MegaSack DRAW - This year's winner is user - rgwb
We will be in touch
Where would I start and is it even possible without a huge upheaval?
I've got a forum with 13,000 members, the majority have registered, got their information and left, never to be seen again, but I'm sure thats the way for many forums of this type.
It used to a an Invisionfree forum before I 'downgraded' to Zetaboards. (one way upgrade). Put simply, its rubbish, the captcha is awful so I have no choice but to moderate all new members, the board won't send any email notifications so if a new member posts on a thread from last year I'll never see it unless I go through 75 pages of old threads looking for some tiny subtext (I approve the user but still have to find any pending posts) there are various bugs, its cluttered and admin is complicated. The final straw is when my paid ad removal ran out, I realised I've been paying to remove malicious ads that are creating full screen popups and redirects to the App store on Android phones, and the support has been poor.
I spend more time just maintaining it than actually looking at the content and I'm sure I'm losing content as new members will wait 12-24hrs for me to trawl through and approve all the new posts, by that time they've moved on.
So, is it possible to scrape all the data onto a new platform that still benefits from backups and some basic support. I'm prepared to pay (a bit) if I can control everything, such as being able to use Google Ads myself.
SMF (Simplemachines Form) is good and has many migration packs for other boards. Install new forum software, setup the database and migrate.
Sounds easy and in some cases it is...
I'll take a look, thanks 🙂
