I have read somewhere today it is law for all companies in any type of business to provide Manual Handling and Fire Awareness training. Written in a crappy local community newspaper by someone who happens to provide this training.

Is this bollocks? Im not referring to whether it is a good idea or the morals of this I'm only interested if it is law to provide this?

Yes it is, training of any sort should be provided on an as needed basis. If manual handling forms part of someone's normal job role (a courier or porter for example) they should be trained in how to carry out their duties in a safe manner. If a person's job does not involve lifting and carrying (accountant for example) there is unlikely to be a need to train them in manual handling.

It sounds to me like a small local training provider trying to scare small local firms into employing them to address non existant "training needs"

It still stands, though, that I would like training in how to be aware there is a fire in progress - this sort of training could be invaluable. Have you got this guy's number? 😉
