Using the coffee machine for any more than 2 people becomes a faff. Anything better than a caffettiera? More for long coffee (if that's even a term) than expresso. 4 person probably. Don't really want another plugin appliance like a drip jug thing (technical term).
Yes. I keep one for these occurrences; aeropress or (gasp) pods for me.
Nowt wrong with a cafetière. Also known as a French press.
We have a thermal cafetiere at home, Which is exactly what it sounds like. also being double walled stainless steel, you dont have that issue of broken glass that you get with a standard one. chuck it in the van-box, kick it about. It just adds character.
Have dabbled in other, faffier coffee, but they just dont taste as good imo.
You can half fill it if there is only one of you, or more realistically, being a thermal one just drink 3 mugs of coffee.

I would look at getting a Chemex https://www.chemexcoffeemaker.com/ten-cup-classic-series-coffeemaker.html would make a good amount of filter.
If you like your design, I can recommend a thermal Stelton vacuum jug. Lots of colours. Classic Scandi design. If we have guests I do a couple of large cafetières and pour into the Stelton which I’ve primed with hot water. The in-laws usually hang around until the early hours and the coffee is still piping hot.
Stelton also do a cafetière which is somewhat insulated. But nothing like the vacuum.
personal taste, obviously, but I prefer filter to french press...you can't get much simpler than a filter and paper and jug
Couple of tips for avoiding the sludge in the bottom of cups that forcing the plunger down can cause. Pour the hot water to the required level, leave it for a couple of minutes then carefully stir to let the big bits fall to the bottom. Leave another 2-3 minutes then just place the plunger on the surface of the liquid, don't push it down more than the froth. Pour through the filter giving it a little swish if it gets blocked. Coffee is much less gritty. Tips borrowed from James Hoffman on YouTube.
Really nice stainless steel insulated one on Amazon for about thirty quid. Used quite often if I need more than a pod or two of coffee and is much less wasteful.

Some of us do. The biggest issue is brew time. If it's very cold out then the water can cool down too quickly so you end up with tepid coffee.
On the Cafetiere thing, I have two. I find it the best option for one mug of coffee and I have a multi-mug one too. @pistonbroke has the right method.

Do what a Hilton hotel did when we stayed in one. Put filter coffee in the Cafeteria, thus removing the sludge. 🙄 👏
I'd say a larger chemex pour over (a slightly more tossery version of filter that appeals to the inner hipster geek if you have one with careful pouring of the water, blooming and at the upper end of the obsession, weighing of grounds and water) but chemex filter papers are hard to get hold of at the moment. I'm guessing covid related somehow.
I drink a lot of french press at the moment but given the choice (and the filters and the time for a bit of ritual) I'd go with the pour over. As the owner of a over the top tossery la pavoni espresso I'd say my tastes now put pour over above espresso - sacrilege I know.

I've gone back to my stove top. I bought it in Italy when I lived there for 3 months back in 1995.
The small stove top makes 4 shots of espresso. Top up with boiling water in a cup to make an Americano style long coffee add milk as required.

Not at all, just made a pot. Takes about a minute to set up, then depending on size/hob it'll take 5-10min to make. Handily it makes a loud spluttering noise to let you know it's finished. Only risk is if you don't hear it and forget to take it off, in which case the coffee ends up boiling and will taste foul.

Nope. Fill the water to the line, fill with ground coffee put on hob full whack. Don't take much longer than time to boil kettle and allow the cafetiere to brew.

That's been the default in every large hotel I've ever stayed in. I can't quite figure out why, even if they're making a huge run of coffee and decanting it surely that's more faff and waste than putting a scoop in a cafetiere?
The exceptions are:
Variations on bean to cup machines if it's a buffet.
Holliday Inn Express, which sometimes have a nescafe "instant to cup" machine, which is as bad as it sounds.

I recently bought this after my MIL broke the glass one for the second time!

I use a 6 cup Bialetti, and boil the water in a kettle before putting it in the Bialetti, I like a large strong coffee.

Name a nice instant coffee. ? I've not had one even the ones that folk have told me are nice....are not much like coffee . Have a taste more akin to what I imagine some charcole would taste like.
I'd rather drink Bovril than instant coffee....at least that is what it says on the tin 🙂

Well I didn't realise this would produce so many little variations. I think I am down to a big French press or one of those stove top things, just a bit nervous of faff and still needing a big jug to keep the made coffee in.
We have a Kinto coffee carafe for when we want to go back for more coffee. Served in Moomin mugs.
For short and sharp a Top Mokka 1 cup stove top, or for 2 the 2 cup 😁
Stovetops are great but I have to be pedantic, they're all one cup sized.
It's just the size of the cup that differs. And the size of the caffeine addiction.

There pretty much isn't anything better than a cafetière really - with a small amount of discipline its the most reliable way you can make good coffee. If you want to make espressos then you need an expresso machine, if you want to make good espressos you need to invest in a good machine and be good at using it. But if you want to make coffee and drink it from a mug then an espresso machine is a bit of a complicated, long winded way of doing that. However making really good coffee in a cafetière is quick, cheap and easy.
Mid size Bialetti stove top here.
As per a couple of other posts it’s a single mug affair for me, a couple of scoops of ground coffee and a dash of milk in the mug. 5 minutes to brew, knock the hob up a notch if I’m in more of a hurry.
I’d say a nice (tough) cafetière for your multiple drinks at the same time requirement.
Stove stop baletti 6 cup - or two, long, with milk. Heat it up from boiling water, about 2 mins, when you hear it bubble run it under a cold tap. Been good so far.

To get the best out of a stove top is faffy, I have and use regularly but but suggesting it for multiple people is plain daft.
If the object of the excercise is a pot of coffee then a cafetier or a chemex or any of the caraf things will totally cut it. But cafetier is definitely the cheapest I hate cleaning them though that's totally irrational.
