Who here suffers from chilblains?

I was surprised to find one on a toe about three years ago, it followed an horrific cycle commute in deep snow (i walked most of it) and initially thought the red itchy lump on my toe was an insect bite.

each winter since ive been revisited, and this year i have the pleasure of one on either foot already.

my circulation isnt the best (cold hands/feet) but i avoid the classic "warming up too fast", im already having to wear socks to bed, but it seems that even thats not been enough

what is causing this? would new footwear and socks help? that'd be walking boots, wellies and riding, do they need to be snug or loose as possible

anyone any nutrition advice that might help?

google tells me that pissing on my toes might help, is this why we used to do so much weeing in shoes?

Anything to help, please, the pain is horrible

I got it after go for a run in the snow with no shoes on a few years back, then sticking them in front of the fire to warm up again 😀
Had it once before, but didn't know what it was, and a couple of times since. Now if my feet are like ice, I'm a bit more careful about exposing them to warmth too quickly, so no boiling hot shower.
The itching is incredible though, so you have my sympathies.

My wife has this big time. She has a prescription drug (cant remember the name) that dilates her capillaries, hence preventing the 'shutdown' and cold hands. Also, she tries to wear gloves whenever possible (thin gloves underneath mittens), stays off too much alcohol and is currently trying adding ginger to her diet which l believe acts in the same way as the drugs. Oh, and stay warm!

Aviod extremes of hot and cold if poss, and slow acclimatisation to normal temp after any exposure is best. Roomy non-constictive footwear, especially for the toes, with room for a non tight, natural fibre sock. You do not want to restrict the circulation in any way if you can help it...........

Go and see your GP and get your circulation checked would be a good place to start.

Why would you avoid alcohol? It's a vasodilator as far as I know, surely that would help.

Should i be wearing longs?

i always make sure my feet are cosy, that said my winter boots are a little tight so i cant overdo the socks..... but i use 3/4s (baggy in the summer, bibs more in the winter)as i dont suffer cold calves/shins
