We will be in touch
I think I ask this every year but I'll feel less guilty if others have done it yet...
Mine's come on the thermostat a couple of times.
Haven't turned ours (AGA) off since last year.
And you need to qualify why you are, as it was 2.5c yesterday morning here (Scotland).
FFS! I came in from work tonight & the car said it was a tropical 14deg outside. The house was like a bloody furnace with the stat at 30!
I promptly turned it down to 5 & opened some windows. 10 seconds later the mrs started sneezing & said she was cold.
It'll be like this till next June.
We've had it on about 3 or 4 times now. The other half keeps protesting, but it's still summer...ish, I keep telling her.
Living in the far northern reaches of England though, I think it'll be going on soon. Temps are getting into single figures.
Put it on when we moved in, about 12 years ago 😀 The thermostat also activates it most mornings and some evenings at present !
It was about 10°C this morning and 23°C this afternoon in SW France so doors and windows were left open till it started to cool. That's a no then. House is currently at 23°C and hasn't dropped below 22°C yet this Autumn.
A couple of 5am starts this week so it's been on to warm up ready for getting out of the shower.
Old house in rural mid Wales, so a bit chilly now.
I have been fighting it but caved in to woman pressure!
Lol, I had it on for an hour last week when it was 7 deg outside - I'd gone to work and left windows open on both side of the house.
Wife is a jumper wearing hottie so it's usually down to me to wimp out first. Hoping for a couple of weeks yet.
Having woken up to hard frost on the tent last weekend...
We have caved and popped it on for 30 mins in the morning and mid evening.
I wont consider any heating till October
No central till December possibly later and I could live without it.
You lot really need to toughen up and consider jumpers and thermals
Anyone put theirs on yet?
How quaint. 🙂
I don't think I've turned ours off for about 15 years. Thermostats are a wonderful invention.
To the question - has the thermostat (set to 17 Deg in the hall 12 months a year) kicked the heating in yet? Yes, a couple of mornings so far but only for half an hour or so each time.
No.
4C this morning and the windows are still wide open here in Stirling.
Thump intends to wear shorts to school every day this winter - just like last winter.
And I was born a Southern-softie.
We've had ours on a few times. Just moved in to an extended Victorian house and the older half can feel a bit chilly. Two wood burners though so it can get plenty toasty.

This + lots ours is set for 18 Deg in the hall and I think its kicked in once since last winter, it was last week & TBH it was my fault as I had left the landing window open from the day when it was very sunny = clear cold night.
The thought of turning it on and off seems so old fashioned, it has time temperature targets and that's worked fine for the last 10 years.
Not for about 7 years, no.
The boiler died and never replaced it as our log burner heats the house. That was on last week when the temp dropped during the day to about 7c but since then it's been high teens to low 20s.
Central heating. Anyone put theirs on yet?
Nope, i have to admit to being a tight arse scotsman and say the heating has never been switched on, my radiators are operated by a Daiken heat pump that the council/housing association fitted a few years ago, it also does hot water which is great but i have the heating thermostat set to only come on if it drops below 5degrees inside (which it never has done…yet!).
I did fit an inset multi fuel stove in the living room after they removed the old style fireplace but that hasn't been lit since may and i'm holding out till the end of October before i light it again.
It's currently a balmy 11 degrees inside and the windows are still open, i can't abide a warm/stuffy house - much prefer fresh air.
No. Not until bonfire night.
All the house windows are still open (North Wales) haven't been closed since March
In Town? nope. Tend not to until about late Oct. At home on the coast? the thermostat has kicked in a few times over the weekends yes.
I hate the cold so couldn't really care less when/if just as long as I'm not cold.
I need a new boiler but I'd like a new bike.....
Had the Propex running for a few mornings when we stayed in the campervan over the last fortnight which probably used about £2 of LPG.
At home, no...though my wife has been pestering me to order some firewood for this winter 🙂
I didn't get my combined gas/electric/firewood for the next year down to an estimated £750 by being generous with the heating 🙂 (detached bungalow in the balmy south but exposed coastal location) Reckon I can chop a fair bit off that as last year the heating came on for an hour at 5pm to give the stove a hand getting the house warm, but wife rarely gets in before 7pm so time for the stove to do its job anyway.
My boiler's life can likely be measured in hours, so will only be used this year when the temperature drops below zero.
I have underfloor heating and the manufacturer recommends it's never switched off (in fact I can't actually switch it off). So the control stat has been set back at 14. In my head this is to protect the building fabric. I've felt the odd hot spot in the floor of a morning which means it must have triggered the heating (or the pump has come on to circulate after a period of time as per manufacturers settings).
I currently live in a recent renovated cottage so decent levels of insulation (too well as if I stick the burner on its way too hot within an hour in the main (larger, open plan) room). So I guess that helps! Don't think the stove has been on since February...
I always try and resist putting the heating on/stat up until after the tattie holidays and the start of the official Scottish heating season (I work in the Eng dept of an LA).
Plus I was brought up with the mantra: it's cheaper to put on a jumper than a fire.
our stoves been on a handful of times, although at the moment it would be cheaper to run the boiler than burn wood (alas we dont have our own coppice)
One afternoon in mid-September it's been on, still don't think it's quite cold enough we want to get into October before we set a timer so for now it's off, though tomorrow who knows 😉 as it's October
My wife is looking forward to October – it's only then that I accept it might be starting to get a bit cooler. Still I am the one always sat there in a tee shirt whilst she is still complaining of the cold even though the heating is on and she has a jumper on.
Funny though isn't it - we are all manly about not putting the central heating on yet we all boast about our amazing log burning stoves. 🙂

Just saying - the whinging mares might have a point....especially if you are a bit tubby.
Although I have Thermostats around the house I still have to "turn" the CH on....by filling the furnace and burning things.
I wont do that for a good while yet - at least not while there's so much sun during the day. The solar gain I get through the big (12' x 12') south facing driftway window this time of the year* puts enough heat into the stone floor to keep the barn at a comfy 19-20degrees all evening. Woke up to the house at 19.5deg this morning. Its probably 7-8deg outside this morning.
If it gets chilly in the evenings I will light the woodstoves for a few weeks first. So I reckon it will be nearly Nov before I fire up the furnace and UFH.
* although this is an exceptionally sunny Sept. Once it starts getting cloudy again, the house temp will slowly start dipping.
I ran mine for an hour on Sunday, only as a test though as I'd replaced 2 radiators and wanted to make sure nothing was leaking before I put the floors back down.
Might swap back to the winter duvet this weekend as it's certainly feeling a little chilly in the mornings.
1/2 term and then its allowed on very low. Having said that it never went to more than 2 out of 5 last year. Open fire has sadly been lit most evening at about 7pm for the last fortnight.
Wood burner can stay cold until it gets cold outside.
We have jumpers and slippers.
my mrs was sat on the sofa in a dressing gown, with a blanket on a couple of nights ago, while i was sat next to her in shorts and t-shirt,
were on LPG bottles with this house, she knows they cost, so she's more reluctant to put it on, also, i told her the bottles are low and I've not ordered any yet 😆
Nope it's off and it's staying off although I did test it briefly the other week just to make sure it was OK
Cold is a challenge and what doesn't kill you only makes you more uncomfortable
No way, still sleeping with the window open - it's 'nippy' at night, but still hitting 18c most days. It's ****ing criminal I've got pneumonia, I bet it pisses down the first day my lungs works and doesn't stop till May.
Anyway, as other have said, ours is set by the thermostat, but with a modern energy efficient house it only comes in when it's bitter out (about the only bloody good thing about new houses).
oooh lar-dee-dar with your central heating you
Mine comes on every morning and evening. Mind you that's a grand total of two radiators in the entire house...
Flicked it on for an hour or so a few times but it's not on in anger yet. That could change on days where I work from home in the next couple of weeks I expect.
Nope.
Lit the fire on a couple of evenings last week. This week seem super mild.
Don't have it, so nope. Might dig the fan heater out in December if I run out of jumpers.
Anyone else still commuting in shorts?
Was forced into it at the weekend. My wife has not heard of jumpers. She may have had laundry to dry as well.
Anyone else still commuting in shorts?
Wear shorts all day till about December...
Ours came on last weekend for a few minutes before I turned it off again; I'm not sure why, it (a honeywell CM927) is currently turned off so should only come on below 5 degrees, and it said 18.5. I think I might start researching new controllers...
Anyone else still commuting in shorts?
I'm still in short shorts now, but 3/4 length shorts can't be far away.
Why would anyone commute in anything longer, it's never that cold... 🙂
How is your solar thermal doing, Stoner? Does it shorten your heating season? I've just had one of the last 100% solar showers of the Summer, no cold water needed so it'll soon need an electric top up.
I've never got the jumpers thing - especially since good old Cameron mentioned it a few years ago; it's no replacement for CH. You still would have to endure cold air around your head, body and feet. Cold rooms etc.
I think wearing jumpers just generally is not about comfort. A warm house is a cosy house. Having lived in the sticks for several years with no CH - I'm enjoying it now.
No, Not switched it on yet .
Still shorts and T shirt weather so no need .
We've got one of those Hive jobbies and it's set to 21 degrees between 0530 and 0730 (so it's warm when we wake up and until we go to work) and then again from 1400 to 2300 (from when Mrs Wife comes home from work and until we go to bed). As we live in Glasgow, there's not many days it doesn't trigger.

[checks Rone's post history having previously assumed they are a man....but after that post not so sure. 100% lady logic detected]
I did the other day when it would not stop raining - had to dry a towel.
It was on on the 6th of September when we got home from our SUMMER holiday!
Nope, I was sun bathing on my patio this afternoon, try a hat you'd be surprised at how warm you will feel.
Went round to a mates, heating on he's in his shirt and t shirt

This +1
These threads are often more macho than the "I'm the greatest driver" threads!
I like comfort. Luckily I can afford the comfort. It's something I'm happy to spend money on cos the whole family is happy in a comfortably warm house.
Folks liking different things/living differently it is hardly news
Are you bragging when you tell us you can afford to live in "comfort" [ or are you just suggesting i cannot afford to turn the heating on?] or just the folk who say they would wear a jumper rather than put on the central heating?
Can I call you gentle names for this ?
Some insult those who do things differently and you are doing it whilst suggesting the others are "bragging" 🙄
Those sorts of insults are not even worthy of the playground never mind adults and folk are just giving honest answers
You like a warm house., I am very pleased for you and wont call you names for this shakes head walks away
Is there no issue too trivial for this not to happen on here?

Edukator, solar thermal is still contributing but probably only 25% of demand now (4 of us in the house). At least it IS contributing. Ive changed my system a bit this season. Ive installed an immersion heater in the thermal store which means I can now top up the tank without having to fire the biomass boiler which has is v inefficient to just to DHW (it has to heat a 200litre tank in the boiler before it can move any energy into the thermal store from where DHW is drawn). So far that is working really well. It means the water at the bottom of the thermal store stays cold (it doesnt when the biomass boiler runs) and so works best with what energy the solar collector can glean.
Nope, plesently surprised actually given there's been frost on the ground almost every day.

Ahem, bog off 😉
If this was about a challenge I would out cold you all - still in shorts/Jersey for off-road commute - 30 miles a day.
But, it's not, it's about being comfortable at home and enjoying the mod-cons after the rough.
And all I'm saying is putting a jumper on is a stupid replacement for CH.
As for bragging about being able to turn on the CH - not buying that - he's just come to terms with the cost! Rather than bragging in any sort of macho way. If you can't afford to use the heating then that's pretty miserable but given the nature of the punter on here I would imagine most could.
Thanks for the update, I've added yet more insulation to the solar circuit which raised the temperature a little. It's after the equinox that we really benefit from being further south. 23°C inside this morning, 13°C outside with over 20°C and sunny forecast for this afternoon. Three solar showers and a washing machine fill this morning but a sunny day will result in a another full tank of hot water.
If this was about a challenge I would out cold you all
You really wouldn't 🙂 (Google world ice swimming championships)
Agreed, clothes are no substitute for heating, but to not acknowledge that clothes are seasonal, even indoors (which might mean needing less CH) is generally the preserve of the lady of the house.
it's about being comfortable at home and enjoying the mod-cons after the rough.
I'd say it's more about how well your house solar loads during the day. Ours is still at 20C inside when I get back from work without using the CH and it holds the heat over night as well. Hence no need to use heating and I can sit about quite comfortably in shorts. Not too bad for a solid walled Victorian house (but then we are down South).
Well my wife switched it on this morning - 7.58am on the morning of October 1st and I heard the familiar 'click, click, click' of the radiators warming up even though it was a positively balmy 12deg outside and 18deg inside. She said it 'takes the edge off'. Not quite sure what she is taking the edge off though.
😕
I'm off home tonight (Yay!!!) No Mrs, Full weekend of riding, can't wait to get my R5ca from my LBS (service) and getting my nose into my favorite hills of all time.
Il Lombardia on Sunday..
And slam that heating onto that Max Paint Melting setting.... 8)
Edukator - Id be surprised if you're catching much sunshine in France at the moment. Bloody horrible weather in the HSavoie right now 🙂
Could you PM me when you can, I have a French DIY qu for you.
A walk in the sunshine this morning, a sunny swim in the outdoor pool over lunchtime, the rain arrived at 17:00.
YGM
14/11, that's the latest we've had to wait before needing to heat. 19°C but Madame is wandering around with a blanket around her shoulders so I've taken the hint - the wood burner is roaring.
Not quite but will do soon. It was 24 degrees out earlier. Brrrr. Genuinely, it's amazing how acclimatised you can become!
Once it gets down to 20 the gloves are coming out.
I thought I was doing okay when it started coming on a couple of weeks ago - although it hasn't been on a lot, the place does seem to need a top-up of heat most mornings and evenings (only to 20 mind you - well maybe 20.5)
I've started firing the furnace boiler a week ago, but only to heat the boy's toy room and do DHW. The rest of the house makes do with heat from the wood burners. No need for UFH throughout or rads yet. Still so mild.
still not put the heating on as its simply not cold enough. its been over 10º at night and very warm for november during the day so no point. flat is well insulated and a lot warmer than my GF’s victorian place with sash windows.
nothing to do with being miserly or bravado but i cant see the point in sitting here sweating in a t-shirt with the heating on.
as soon as night time temps drop into single figures i’ll put it on (electric storage heaters so less controllable than a gas boiler). i want to have a heated towel rail on a timer fitted and that might have been useful on a few mornings but it’s certainly not uncomfortable.
i did grow up with no heating/single glazing/non cavity walls so i guess i dont feel the cold like some people do.
if Metcheck is to be believed then it’s going on this friday and we are due the first frost on sunday (london)
We've lit the wood burner in the evenings some nights, just to keep the cats happy you understand.
I'm currently trying to save money by only firing up one boiler at a time. 😥
Mines been on and off a while but I'm not properly mobile yet so get ****in cold easily.
Hate my nervous system sometimes...
Ha ha! Thermostat wars rage in our house; all the TRVs are opened full even in the kitchen with the Aga on and the lounge with the multi-fuel blasting out heat. Mrs Gti sits huddled and shivering while I'm sweating in a T shirt. She swims three miles a week and nourishes herself on one orange, a handful or nuts and a bowl of yoghurt every day so I think she's in permanent calorie deficit. On top of the shivering she complains that she's exhausted all the time.
So yes, full CH every morning and evening, lounge stove and Aga on full.
Amazing how easy these things can break Global 😉

's Globalti Warming innit!
GF had a hive/nest thingy fitted today. i have the login for the app 😆
i wonder if i can set it to -drop 4º when i’m within 1 mile radius?
