Has anyone fitted/used a repeater to improve the level of packet data signal when they are in their vehicle? I'm thinking that there must be something capable of using a bigger aerial and more battery power than a mobile phone comfortably houses.

You need a license to run cellular repeaters.
I doubt there are any battery operated ones, but there are lots of 240V ones meant for offices & warehouses, etc. There's plenty on ebay (or were, 2years alone when I last looked).

Aha - that might make more sense. I'd need a contract though as it would have its own SIM (or I'd have to take the one out my phone)

* ponders *

A few years ago, external phone aerials on cars and connectors on phones (little round connector behind a rubber plug typically) were commonplace. Fallen out of favour these days, no-one used them (and Apple didn't support it) I guess.

I don't see how rigging up an external antenna would be overly complex, with the right phone. Get a 6310i and a roof-mounted aerial and you'd pick up signal on the moon. Probably.

Googling, there's adapters available which get round the lack of aerial port by having a small inductive pad on a cradle which talks at low power to the internal antenna right next to it.
