Why would people get a contract phone from one of the above rather than direct from the network? Surely they can only offer the same phones and price plans as the network offer themselves..?

For me it would be cos i live 5 minutes walk away from carphone warehouse, and if there is a problem I can walk back in and speak the the bloke i got the phone from. And yes itdoes cost the same as if i'd got it direct from the network.

No, I got my phone from phones4u and was cheaper than going to Orange direct. The deal might be cheaper, but then they try and sell you insurance and accesories etc.

I guess they are happy making a smaller margin on sales than Orange are. Also they can offer things like cash back which Orange will not do.

I got a contract through www.mobiles.co.uk with Orange (part of the carphone warehouse group) much cheaper than I could from the network themselves (or any other network). Granted, I have to remember to apply for the cashback but I've had no problems there 15mths in.

The bluetooth also stopped working on it but it was a free repair via Carphonewarehouse shop despite being over a year old (2yr warranty on Nokias). All handled quickly and simply.

I'm sure others will have bad things to say about them but my experience of them has been brilliant.

Wrong. I don't know how it works for them financially but I've regularly got the best deals from phones4u - ok you usually have to talk to a smarmy salesperson for 20 mins but if you go in there with some idea of the phone and monthly rate you want to pay and it's half reasonable, they can get it for you. They've even often bought me out of my old contract (with a couple of months to run) and given me cash.

Wanted a Motorola Defy - with Orange that would mean increasing my contract. Phones4U, same contract, but with reduced tarriff because iw as going to get that from Orange anyway, so

Why would people not get a contract phone from one of the above rather than direct from the network?

there, a one word fix for you
