if im painting car panels at home what sort of finish should i go for? its on a landrover so finish isn't my biggest worry? btw its going onto ally panels

Not sure I get what you are asking, do you mean gloss, matte etc?
But if you want it to last then get an etch primer such as U-pol acid etch.
I would go gloss as it is easy to polish out problems - runs, dust etc. Matte can't be polished but hides imperfections in dodgy panels.
