Later in the year I fancy driving from here to Venice with the wife and (small) hound. I don't want to use my own car so I was thinking about hiring a Mercedes SLK two seater which is about a grand for the week.

Given the budget what would you hire? remembering the high mileage prevents the hire of anything really posh or flash.

if budget was no object & I wasn't too bothered about luggage, I think one of these:

My wife has an old shape Mx5 and it is fantastic fun to drive, new version is a little bigger and just as much fun I'm sure.

Pretty sure you would get that in budget and they do a metal folding roof version for security though 1/2 the fun is hearing all the noise through canvas!

Cheap flight to Venice and hire a Smart Cabriolet (assuming your going in a summer month) when your there... money left over for food and nice stuuf during the week. Enough space in the back for spare pants, the few clothes you will need and of course your credit card. Hound is in the kennels...

Wont an SLK be way too small with luggage and a dog on board?

You'll find most premium car hirers have a mileage premium (as they want to sell the car on) and wont allow a car to be taken out of the UK (cough stolen to order to Africa etc). buk your wife is soooooooooooooo lucky. I can only run one car- GF wont let me get a second (well 3rd if you count the one sat on my drive for the past year).

Approach a local specialist garage who will likely be struggling with sales and come to an agreement for hire, you might have to arrange your own insurance and european breakdown cover but this shouldnt eat the budget too much.

You should be able to get something quite a bit better than an SLK which is a pretty common sight on the roads. In spite of the inclusive insurance, mileage loading and breakdown cover a grand to hire a 30 grand car for a week sounds ridiculous.

Surely everythings relative; a few years ago at a time when I was between cars I hired a Yaris for £15 a day. The car had 1000 miles on the clock when I picked it up, and I put 250 more on it in the 24 hour hire period. I know it was only a Yaris but it was still a £10k car.
