Yes yes I know it’s a Vectra so let’s take all the piss taking as read.

I’ve been having a few issues with The Mighty Vectra (TMV). It was difficult to start and occasionally after a couple of hours on the motorway there was a loss of power accompanied by a warning light. Power would return and the light go out if I slowed down or stopped.

It was in for a service at the weekend and the diagnostics / fault logging system brought up 2 issues.

1) Faulty glow plugs
2) Faulty glow plug relay

Once these were replaced it felt much better if a little “tight”. However, after about 3 miles at motorway speed I had the power loss again. I pulled over, switched it off and switched it back on again. Now it feels like new and two 45 minute commutes haven’t seen the power loss return.

Eh?

Was it some sort of brain-fart brought on be the new bits or what?

Wouldn't that show up in the diagnostic?

Have you been reading the other thread? I punched it 5 times! However, I busted a knuckle after 3 so my hand is a bit of a mess.

If it's the most recent style vector then an eve fault will show as a little orange engine on the dash ( and in the diagnostic) when it properly goes it will put you into limp home mode. So it's probably not that (yet). We have vauxhalls as company cars and of 5 vectras in my office, all 5 have had egr valves replaced before 50k miles. If you went to a vauxhall dealer it is worth being firm and repeat visits (if within warranty) as they do seem to work on the basis of pretending nothing is wrong until at least the 3rd visit 🙄

Lord only knows how vauxhall are going to honour their new lifetime warranties!

Difficult to start is likely to be the injector leak off pipes perished letting air in once the car has stood for a couple of hours. Other common issue is the injector top seals, which gives the same symptoms, and can be identified by checking if the diesel that comes out the leak of pipes is black due to oil being drawn in (the leak of pipes tie into the suction side of the fuel pump, so that if the seals internally start leaking, you'll get starting issues rather than flooding the engine with diesel).

The lack of power after driving for a while, I'd guess as being an issue with the vacuum side (wastegate, swirl ports & egr are all vacuum actuated). The small rubber connecting pipes often split, but also the vacuum pump itself often fails. Easily checked using a vacuum gauge to check there's a good 0.7bar of vacuum getting to all the control valves.

Diagnosed as a split hose off the turbo.
