It wad probably the dealer taking 'run for the hills' to the extreme with benz's motor!

Sorry OP, hope he's just busy and get it sorted.

Apologies for not updating earlier, but trying to keep a job at the moment is the priority"

I used a colleagues 'phone and ultimately we talked. Which was good. And amicable.

So.....and I know not a lot about cars.....

Apparently said vehicle had a slipping clutch. During visit to garage to replace said clutch, during replacement of gearbox it would not line up with the mounts. They believe that the car was heavily crashed at some point and chassis rails or body 'sprung'. The chap advises that he was avoiding me as he was 'chicken' about providing bad news and not knowing how to deal with it.

The model in question is rather rare, but he just happens to be picking up another next week. It will be inspected thereafter pictures will be sent and we'll take it from there, with some specific requirements. At least I know that if the key original fixtures and fittings are absent then there should be a donor car to provide...

Well it's good to talk, and I guess it's a possible reason, but I don't get why he was scared about telling you. It wasn't his fault, apparently. I guess it's up to you to decide whether you believe him or not.

Sounds a bit like the Garage sold the car for more money to someone else, made up story about the car being irreparable and is now maybe sourcing you another car..

So he's just writing that car off is he?

Is he bollocks. They'd be able to get the gearbox back on the mounts somehow and even if true he'd just of given you a refund.

Honestly OP just walk away. Ask for your money back and move on. If he won't refund you slap in the small claims paper work, just finnish this nonsense up.

Heart says one thing, logical brain says the opposite.

The car reg (might even be classed as cherished) is currently on a SORN.

We did discuss transferring this reg to this potential replacement vehicle.

Guess I could ask for some current pics of the car which is now a piece of s.....

Currently I do not have the time to drive the 4.5 hrs each way to take a look unfortunately.

Can you not ask for the money back and use it to buy a car from closer to home?

I think that's the problem. If you want something a bit different, get it a bit more local. It will always involve a bit of effect on your part. If you don't have the time, get something simpler/nearer.

Just a side note .. if its 4.5hrs drive how would you address any issues with the car after you have bought it.. My thought is that if the garage seller knows this there is potentially a new thread in a few months time. Much like Brexit , I'm oot!

Get your £££ back and start looking for something else (preferably within a more local area).

As I (and others) said, he sold it. The replacement may be just as good, in which case no harm done. Or it may be a figment of his imagination in which case he'll string you along for months to come...

You're being lied to, I can't believe you've fallen for such codswallop and then not asked for your money back.

4.5 hours each way for £1250 is nothing why or use the train.

If you come out of it with the car you want, then do it.

There could be a number of reasons why that car is not available now, including the one he gave you. Mechanic crashed it going to get lunch, stolen, broken for spares by the garage to do a rush job etc etc.

Just be more proactive about keeping in touch and getting updates. If it is Goodwood Sports Cars as has been suggested they have a good rep. I have an MX5 mad friend who deals with them a lot.

It sounds like the car is a mx5 rs-limited. They are rare, and the desirable recaro seats and nice wheels are often missing. You can't just find another locally.

All other things aside,

The fact that he avoided you for weeks and then when finally tricked into talking to you admitted that he was avoiding you would be enough for me to be asking for my money back, dream car or no.

Perhaps he is not picking up said phone to talk to said customer about said car because he finds overuse of the word said quite annoying.

Anyways, I am staggered that you have not yet asked for your money back.

So you buy it and soon after there is a major problem. Another 18 months of non contact while you try and get him to meet his legal responsibilities?

Money back or small claims.

Hook.
Line..
&
Sinker..

Man, he's got you well and truly caught.

The car might be rare, might be sought after, might be a figment of someone elses imagination because for sure it's not yours..

You came on here asking our opinion, you've been honest enough to open up to all your lack of action and inaction and distraction and lack of traction.

There will be other cars, sure there will. If this Guy is the only one in the country to do up cars of this ilk i'd eat my Gym Slip.

I'd get my money back and go elsewhere.

If it's an MX-5, and you know nothing about cars, why does it need to be some super limited edition with bells and whistles added?

I always thought modifying cars for the sake of it was a daft game. Either buy a car you want to drive fast, do some track days and get faster. Or go racing and modify the car within whatever the rules allow (which may or may not ban coil-overs anyway meaning your expensive upgrade is of use to neither man nor beast).

So a car drove into a garage for a clutch but then they couldn't re-fit the gearbox? It must fit, as its the same gearbox and it drove in? Also how mangled does a car have to be for that to happen given that on an mx5 the gearbox is in the centre of the car?

So then what happened, they just broke the car for bits?

Too many lies for my liking..

One thing I have learnt from years of racing and tracking cars is to buy one already done. You never get back what you spend to get them modified and you can get one with all the trick bits you want on it for not a lot.

I bought me an illusion
An I put it on the wall
I let it fill my head with dreams
And I had to have them all
But oh the taste is never so sweet
As what you'd believe it is - well I guess it never is
It's these prejudiced illusions that pump the blood
To the heart of the biz

Oh dear Lord... Mate, get in a car/ on a train, go see this fella in person, demand your money back or go legal cos cash is cash and it's yours not his. It's that simple. It sounds like you're going to track the car going by the mods, I do hillclimbing and there are loads of good, bad and indifferent MX-5s out there so sure there's a one out there with your name on it that doesn't involve this monumental grief.

Well I did ask for initial opinions and got that and a bit more - both an insight into myself and also of some STW'ers who obviously took the pulling wings off butterflies training completed during childhood into mature adulthood. Hey-ho.

One thing I did note during the conversation was the use of past rather than current tense.

For amusement, let's see what happens next week.

Yep, you have already waited over a year to get nothing except another promise, what harm is there in waiting another week 🙄

OP you're being taken for a ride. I know comparatively nothing about cars, but I do know a fair bit about human nature. Being a bit of a soft git myself I've been on the receiving end of similar behaviour myself (builders in my case). Fact is that broadly speaking, when confronted with decent, trusting people, there is a type of human that merely sees weakness that can be exploited. Sounds like this is the situation in which you find yourself. He knows he can fob you off and will continue to do so until you man up and sort it out..

Random thought perhaps but,

If you really are dead set on this vapourware vehicle that it's taken them a year to discover is actually ruined, or its hypothetical replacement for that matter, why don't you just buy the smegger and get it to a local garage on a low loader?

Or to quote the immortal wisdom of Randal Graves: either you need to shit or get off the pot.

Don't know much about butterflies, but I do know that as the saying goes about death and taxes, the other near certainty in life is if you leave yourself open to being shafted- you will be shafted 😐
