I'm thinking of a getting a plugin 12volt socket type bluetooth transmitter for the 2nd the car, that doesn't have bluetooth. I was thinking of a parrot kit but does anyone have any experience of these, they seem a lot simpler! No need to hard wire into the car electrical system.
Thank you in advance.

Do you have an AUX input? If so use that for the bluetooth as it's the best I've found for old cars.
We use one of these and it's spot on.

I had one of these and was actually really impressed! Much better than I expected and the call quality was really good too

We bought some £7 Chinese nonsense off that Amazon, bluetooth receiver into cigarette lighter, then it broadcasts on FM and you tune your radio into it - works fairly well, certainly for the pennies it costs! We tune to 87.5, so there's little in the way of stations busting in, although you do occasionally get interference from another vehicle clearly doing the same thing. Has a couple of USB ports to charge phones, too. 🙂

IME the FM radio frequency ones are poor sound quality really compressed audio.

An into the aux 3.5mm better. No real recommend on models. I’ve used £10 cheapos off eBay and worked well.

You may find the rear of your head unit may have inputs too, sometimes a better quality input than 3.5mm.

Assuming you're trying to get phone audio and calls to come out of the car speaker you need a Bluetooth receiver not a transmitter.

And if you do have a 3.5mm aux in then you're laughing, don't get one of those FM things, there terrible by comparison.

Anker are well regarded for most things. This would work, but there's loads of cheaper ones on eBay.

I was put off the Anker by the reviews, the TaoTronics TT-BR05 had slightly better reviews and was better for me as I just plugged it into the double ender (oo-er!) I already had since my Aux socket is in the glove box. Thanks Ford. No, really.

Agree some FM modules are shit but we did get some quality tunes from the car in front on the way back from Fort William once.

I have a dual USB charging adapter plugged into the lighter socket, I charge my phone from one socket and use this in the other. Works flawlessly

I had one that plugged into my iPod, it was ok-ish locally, but as soon as I got near to Bristol, it got stomped on by Welsh radio and if heading to London, it got stomped on by all the pirate stations.
BT is the best option.

We've got the UGREEN linked above, in the 2010 Aygo (spare car) and it's bloody great. Dual 12v low profile charger, the the UGREEN and a multi charger (USB C, USB Mini and Apple) charger in the other, Works great with the City Bug radio... Does the job. The Speakers are rubbish, but hey ho.

Just click on the picture mate, it'll take you to the amazon page.

I've used the FM receivers in the past. They can be okay but the AUX ones are miles better.

I've got a bluetooth to FM one, quality seems fine, it's a long way from the rubbish ones you used to get back in the days of diskmans on spring loaded arms. My only gripe with it is its fairly quiet, so the car stereo has to be ~50% louder than it is for any other input.

Bluetooth into the aux would cut out the random interference on long journeys though, so if you can that's probably better. Most cars will have an aux somewhere, even if it means pulling the stereo out and plugging an adapter into the back.

I've got a plug in Bluetooth to FM one languishing in my garage if anyone wants to try one for free. It's otherwise destined for e waste as its not worth selling.

Depending on your car & stereo it might be possible to add a Bluetooth module.

I installed one on my partner's 08 golf. Plugged into the back of the head unit in the unused multidisc port. Was fairly cheap and works a treat.

Excuse a brief sidetrack, but...

Just click on the picture mate, it’ll take you to the amazon page.

Wait, do Amazon links work for other people on this site? Every Amazon link I click just gives me a "We're sorry. This preview is unavailable." error with a Kindle header.

No. It's been broken for ages. You need to paste Amazon URLs in LINK tags.

we had an amazon echo auto in our old car for a similar purpose. Allowed voice control of maps, music etc and was pretty useful. Not expensive either.

Thank you all. I've ordered a UGREEN bluetooth receiver. I will let you know how good (hopefully) or poor it is.

UGREEN bluetooth receiver update.

Well after 3 weeks of using it intermittently, I have got to say it's pretty good, it connected with my phone easily and once you turn the volume up on the Aux setting it is clear and very usable.

Many thanks to all who recommended the options above.
