If you ride, run or walk in Greater Manchester, South Lancashire and North Merseyside you might be able to help with this conservation project.

The Brown Hare has suffered a 75% decline in England since the 1960’s. The substantial decline is due partly to changes in land management and agricultural intensification, but also from poaching and illegal coursing.

A new project in the North West of England is aiming to reverse this decline and help the hare to flourish once again.

The North West Brown Hare project is looking for people to send in records of their hare sightings and more importantly, volunteer to carry out hare surveys across Greater Manchester, South Lancashire and North Merseyside.
Once the results are in, the project aims to work with local landowners to create a range of suitable habitats in order to link up isolated hare populations. The goal is to not only increase hare numbers across the region but also improve wider farmland biodiversity.
The North West Brown Hare Project is a collaborative partnership project initiated by the Greater Manchester, Lancashire and North Merseyside Biodiversity Partnerships and is funded by the SITA Trust, PTES, Greater Manchester Ecology Unit and The Tree Council.

For details of how to log your hare sightings, take part in a survey training day or volunteer to complete a survey visit www.brownhare.org.uk or contact Samuel Bolton (North West Brown Hare Project) Tel: 0161 3424409 Mob: 07854163376 email Samuel.bolton@tameside.gov.uk
