Possibly more in keeping with the ethos here if we got a "hate" button first? 😉

It's be more useful than that Share button which I don't think I've ever used, I've never seen anyone else use, and which massively slows down the page loading.

There is a report-post button...

Hmm, I don't see it as the post load script hides it and stops it irritating me, but it would be more efficient to stop it loading...

I've not intentionally blocked it, so I'm guessing it's an AddThis Widget..

Yeah it is the addthis.com - I noticed that the status regularly got stuck on "Waiting for addthis.com" so I manually blocked it (using ABP of Firefox) and the page loads went back to being near instant.

Only problem with Ghostery is that some sites, eg Screwfix, won't work until you either whitelist the whole site or work out which things the site needs to work. Most sites work fine with it just blocking everything though....

although use or discussion of such tools is prohibited by STW 'rules'.

"just saying"

I thought promotion of the tools was banned, discussing them in relevant context of something was permitted (other threads have existed). Plus Ghostery doesn't block ads (that I know of), just trackers and annoying widgets which no one uses but slow websites down.

Wow. Just installed ABP and the speed difference is amazing. Clearly I will uninstal it now to appreciate all the adverts and slowness of this site

As a pro, you stil get the SHARE button though.

You can set up Ghostery to block all sorts of nasties (hidden and otherwise), without blocking revenue making stuff.

Cool, does that mean it's OK to discuss it then? The difference it makes to page loading speed is massive. Having checked it does all appear to be down to the AddThis widget, which from what I can see is nothing to do with the revenue making features, it simply adds a "feature" which hardly anybody uses (personally I've still been downloading it, but have been hiding it for ages with the extension I use as I find it spoils the look of the page, irrespective of the time wasted - preventing the download was on my todo list). So if anybody involved in the site does turn up here, don't you think you've made the site worse with that feature?

Then you get people quoting entire posts verbatim just to say "Nah".

As far as I can see, admittedly having never used such a thing, all it is is a lazy way of saying " I thinks that is nice"
What a pointless thing to do.

So, if the pub/forum analogy is correct, what's the pub equivalent of the 'like' button?
A pat on the back?
Slap on the bum?
Glancing over at the trough?

I don't want it, whatever it is.

We don't need these fripperies.
Can't we just express ourselves like we've always done, with simple ignorance, misguided logic and mindless prejudice?

Probably, I've only been burgled twice, had the car stolen and had all my online accounts cleared out since signing up. And there was the syphilis, but other than that, seems fine.

Would someone explain what function a like button serves.

The actual answer?

It's so that Facebook knows what you like, and can sell target advertising to its clients.

However, before you get all tin-hat about that, there are benefits. You've got much more chance of seeing an ad for bike stuff or outdoor gear or whatever. People take the piss out of the watch and Maserati ads on here - well on my FB I get almost entirely bike stuff ads. Including the odd interesting special offer or new product.

So it's not all bad. Just be a little careful in what you click 'like' on. So far Facebook only knows (from direct likes) that I like bikes - this isn't a secret.

However, it does do things based on your friends' posts that you click like on - I suspect it scans those, sees how often you like a friends post and shows you the things that THEY like too. Not sure if it does text scans on the actual posts you like though.

I'm not averse to it, because I know there is just an algorithm behind it. I still carefully filter what I put on FB. It kept bugging me to tell it what university I went to, so I said University of Leave Me Alone. Then it prompted me to make friends with hundreds of other people who went there 🙂 I also never check into places either.

I think the question is rather - what would be the function of a like button on a forum like this? .....

It easily shows the fact you agree with a post without actually having to go to the length of quoting the entire thing just to say

Can we have 'Disappointed' button as well

Disappointingly, I can see the benefit in forcing people to be disappointed in long hand.

You have to be really disappointed to type a post about something rather than just hitting a thumbs down on everything you mildly dislike.

Disappointing, I know.

I'm genuinely surprised a tech savvy person actually sees ads, I don't know anyone techy who hasn't blocked them years ago!
