My laptop has a VGA port but the TV only has red, white and yellow RCA ports. I did go to Dixons for a lead but the guy in there said it can't be done but??

....but even with the right cable it can be a bit flakey picture wise.
You can get a converter for HD15 (VGA) out but you'll get further with an s-video (TV-Out) on your laptop and an s-video cable.
It'll be pretty low resolution so don't expect much.
thanks guys, it's for watching films i've downloaded but if the quality isn't going to be very good it's probably not worth it.
For watching video it'll probably be fine but as others have said using the computer will be painful.
I use my laptop with a "PC to TV" converter box from maplin for watching stuff on iPlayer; the quality isn't quite good enough for general computer stuff but it's more than enough for enjoying a film or telly programme.
