We're going to pull the periwinkle out of our garden as we rennovate the right hand border, but it's colonised the other side of the fence which is our land but we've never done anything with. This year it's produced tons of flowers and is a lovely early display. But the rest of the year it's just green.
Any suggestions for something to plant that can compete with it anbd provide flowers later in the year? In the garden the fuschia bush has done nicely and sticks up above the periwinkle, so perhaps something along those lines...
Campanula (bellflowers) flower from early summer through to Autumn. Mass of variety. You can get clump forming perennial which would spread fairly quickly. Choice is huge so you could choose height of flower to suit your needs. Periwinkle is viola family so native and spreads quickly. Look for something that will also spread quickly and suit your soil.
Campanula does ok in the garden on the other side, but that's improved soil. Worth a try as I do like it.
