We will be in touch
Hi
Mrs Fleecy enjoys a spot of camping, preferably away from the hords, but wants to stay at sites with excellent facilities (e.g. Showers/toilets) otherwise it's a no-go unfortunately.
Appreciate that getting away from it all and excellent facilities may be mutually exclusive, but just wondering if anyone has stayed at some gems - no specific location in mind, UK wide rather than abroad.
Thanks in advance for your thoughts.
I think most sites will have showers and toilets.
Which facilities are you looking for exactly?
Also, One mans excellent is another mans scabby.
Having said that, here's my suggestion, Hoddom Castle
Am guessing maybe as you don't mention any, there are no ickle fleecys?
Cool camping have links for grown-ups only campsites - which if I didn't have kids, I'd head for. They do tend to make a bit of a racket on campsites! 🙂
If you want modern camping facilities then definitely DON'T go to the camping and caravaning club one in Oxford. The wash rooms reminded me of cricket club changing rooms from the seventies. 😯
Torridon is good. Also mountain biking
Torridon campsite is horrid! boggy midge field and crap showers
Sango sands oasis 🙂 Or @Achmelvic are my favourites
Hi
Thanks for the swift responses so far!
There is actually a junior Fleecy, so family friendly is also required.
As for what I had in mind, something that has been well maintained, is clean (and is cleaned regularly), and is more than just a cabin in a field with a muddy floor and an awful smell!
We usually find stuff using:
http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/ and https://www.pitchup.com/
Both pretty useful sites. The first one is older and has more user reviews on it, the second is a bit flashier and easier to use.
Poolewe is nice if rather regimented. Lovely area and you can ride a bike to bad bog - yes - it really is called that on the map
Glen Nevis have some excellent facilities, as do Burrowhayes at West Luccombe. About as far apart as you can get
Thanks all, appreciate all your thoughts.
Keep them coming 🙂
Which end of country?
+1 for Cool Camping adults, with the caveat that you pay a premium. Plus grown ups can be noisy and inconsiderate too....especially with grown up drinks 🙂
Don't want to be too much of a campsite snob, but I am wary of glamping-intensive sites i.e. Those with more than just a couple of pods or wigwams. Non-outdoorsy people sometimes represent the worse of the above....
Perhaps look for sites that have dedicated family and non-family or quiet fields. National Trust do this.
Or seek out Outdoor enthusiast hotspots near popular climbing or biking spots, then everyone will be too tired to make noise.
Best facilities I've ever seen at a campsite were at clippesby hall in Norfolk, even my sister who really does not like roughing it at all thought it was excellent. It's a busy site but if you've a tent then there's a little wooded section which is separate from the main caravan field and feels a bit more secluded.
Warmest shower block in the world - grantown on Spey. Great playground, underfloor heating - awesome in winter
FForest Fields (yes, 2 Ffs) Hundred House near Builth Wells. Superb site in a gorgeous location.
My top is take your own toilet seat. This will upgrade any 2 star campsite to a 3 star, or more!
Heritage coast campsite in Monknash, south Wales. Always have a field farther down for regulars when it's full. Say you've been recommended. Super pub 5 mins walk away, best beach in UK 20 mins walk away. Good facilities. We go quite a bit.
Best beach means no facilities, get cut off at full tide but miles of sand all to yourselves at low tide (if you scramble over rocks for 5 mins to your right) and some massive amonites. Make a fire from driftwood and cook steaks. Beware of rockfalls when collecting driftwood.
morvich. scenery nae too bad either
In a rare moment, I'm agreeing with perchy. Hoddam Castle facilities are the best I have seen, and I've seen a few..
and if you go and dislike it, you can torch his caravan 😀
Here's our 'nice toilets no/nice people' finds so far 🙂
You have to pay for the showers but they are well kept, modern, and there is a family room where you can all go in together which is often easier with a smaller child: Knotlowe Farm, Peak District
Only a small camping area and the rest is caravans and static caravans, but good facilities with small playground and paddling spots nearby: Stainforth, Yorkshire
Similar to Stainforth but better for slightly older children, bigger playground and woods to play in: Near Dalby
Big camping fields with good shower blocks. Very family orientated but goes quiet at night. Norfolk
Park Cliffe in the lakes has private bathrooms you can rent, either by the hour or for your entire stay. Makes camping with kids much easier. Also gives you somewhere to dry stuff if needed.
Dammit KM, you just made me look up where Gairloch is only to find it's far enough out of average arsehole weekend driving distance.
Moorcroft on North uist issue great. And nearby beaches unbelievable.
FForest Fields (yes, 2 Ffs) Hundred House near Builth Wells. Superb site in a gorgeous location.
This
+1 for Clippesby - lovely facilities and hearty pizzas too.
Stayed at Moorcroft on North Uist the other week. Loved the campers kitchen. Nice little gem of a campsite.
Interested
Not so worried about the washing facs ... but you guys are putting up some great looking campsites
STW once again delivers!
Huge thanks to everyone for their thoughts/comments/recommendations, they are sincerely appreciated.
Best facilities we found so far are at the camping and caravan site at Coniston. Only very small camping area with small playground, bathrooms are heated. Also the facilities at both sites in Rothiemurcus (spelling?) near Aviemore are both good, with the private bathrooms of the estate site the best.
We use cool camping tiny campsite book. Also dispite the fact we are not over 60 we are members of the caravan and camping club as it give you access to their cirtified sites. The one marked with a H for Hideaway are the ones to look for.
Not been yet but I hear good things about http://www.comriecroft.com/
They do wild camping (fires allowed), but with showers nearby, and also glamping in ready-to-use Nordic Katas.
Plus they have a ton of mountain biking available and http://www.comriecroftbikes.co.uk/ rent bikes there. 😀
Welsummer Camping in Kent is good, just by Leeds castle. Housedean farm outside Lewes is also good. Both relatively small, Welsummer is great for kids and a lovely little site. We favour small sites that allow fires.
BigSands ^^ there looks amazing.
Couple of my personal favorites:
Cornwall - http://www.churchtownfarm.org.uk/index.html
Lake District - http://www.watersidefarm-campsite.co.uk/
On the other end of the scale in terms of facilities, I went here https://www.tractorsandtents.com/camping/ a couple of weeks ago. All they have is a couple of composting toilets and a tap, I think there might be a couple of cold water showers now actually. Cracking place right on the beach though. The weather was bloody awful when we were there but if it's nice it would be a great place to go.
Pencelli Castle, near Brecon. You'll not get much nicer facilities.

This had the best showers/toilets I've experienced , expensive but we had one of their kitted out bell tents rather than a pitch. the camp site shop sold wine and local cider, and fire wood . They allow open fires each pitch has a dedicated fire pit. The only downside was the ten minute walk to the well equipped village playground if you want swings and the like.
There is an on site caravan for coffee and pastries in the morning ,butcher's van on Saturdays for steaks and burgers and plans for a pizza van.
Middle class families with well behaved kids predominated.
Kipford caravan park great facilities and midway between a good pub and the trails.
Troutbeck Caravan and Camping. Again not cheap but very clean.
Comrie is great, facilities are a bit basic though, composting toilets for example. I'm going to Big Sands for the weekend. Lovely and quiet if you camp amongst the dunes at the eastern end.
