I'm looking for a sound effect, but not sure what it is so don't know where to start looking. Hoping the STW photography department will know.

I think it's something to do with the flash on modern cameras. It's like a little explosion followed by a long sustained high pitch whine that gradually fades.

Bit of an odd request I know...

Thanks Rusty,

I did look on Freesound etc, but couldn't find the sound that's in my head 🙂 So, I thought if I knew what the noise was I could get a mate's camera and do it myself.

What is the sound, do you know? I mean, what causes it?

Actually, the second one on your list is pretty close, so thanks!

Would the explosion be the flash going off and the whine the flash recharging..?

Sounds about right. I know nothing about cameras though so couldn't say for sure...

What househusband said.
The 'off camera flash charging' one, fifth down is really good.

Not heard of that site before - what larks....
🙂

Is the pitch of the whine always constant? Do bigger/smaller flashes produce a different note? Do different camera makes/flash brands make different timbres of sound?

Is the flash a separate part of the camera? If I ask to borrow a friend's camera, will I need to ask for a flash as well?

So many questions...

A big old hotshoe flash would be the best I'd think - I've got an old Minolta that makes the most beautiful sounds.

I've got one that makes a dreadful whine all the time, and another that is silent. I do rather like the pap sound it makes 🙂

i know the sound you are talking about....

had a really cheap hot shoe flash on an late 70's early 80's 35mm slr that sounded like the thing had just self destructed, followed by a recharge whine that increased in pitch/frequency until it was ready for next flash.

I think the explosion like sound was a mixture of flash "pop", mirror slap and aperture actuation.

Not sure that's of any help at all, but i think that is the sound you are describing..
