I replaced my TV aerial a few months ago and only got around to doing the drop from the loft the other day. I also dug out my DVB signal strength tester (not expensive, cheapo argos jobbie). I get 4 TV channels from terrestrial TV but nothing on freeview/digital and there's no lights coming on on the signal strength tester. What are my options to test/get it working before I call in the pros?

Do you definitely have DTV coverage?

This site is good for seeing what your local transmitter is up to (link to mendips, put your own in):

Is it a newish digibox/tv as some older ones, including my old Pace, don't work since the switch-over down here

Do you not lose some of the terrestrial channels when the transmitter is switched to digital?
If so, it sounds like you don't have freeview coverage yet from the transmitter your aerial is pointing at.

I'm definitely in a good freeview area. I've got Guildford and Crystal Palace allegedly giving me good signal.

If you're in a good area & the aerial is pointed OK, with the cable correctly fitted

I'd say there's something wrong with your meter or the cable

Does the cable go through anything [amps, terminated faceplates etc.] between the aerial & the Freeview box/TV?

Crystal Palace which seems to be the general direction of all the ones in the area.

I'm going to get a short bit of coax and wire the meter directly to the aerial to see if it's cabling.

Is your freeview box new enough to handle the changes they made when they did the switchover? I know some aren't.

Don't rely on the Freeview checker website!

It says I can't yet get a full Freeview service until 2011, despite having enjoyed recieving all available broadcast Freeview channels for at least the past 8 years! Not had any interuptions to any channel.

My box has also worked with all of the multiplex re-assignments to date.
