Any advice on length and brands for boards, boots and bindings?
So a lot is going to depend on your experience and what you want the board for (ie riding, carving, jump park etc). Look at Bargain boards they are great for giving advice (especially if you e-mail them). Personally I wouldn't buy 2nd hand boots, after a time they mould to your feet so I would get some new. I got some new boots for £80 and that was about 5 years ago now they are still going strong. The other thing I found last year was to demo a few boards, although not if you are going for a 2nd one. I love Flow bindings as they are so much easier to strap on, don't have to sit down etc but again it's all personal choice and usage.
hope this helps (probably doesn't mind!)!!!!
Hi
Yes, actually that's useful. I should have posted more info.
I first boarded last year for a couple of weeks holiday and to be honest I'm pretty good at it on that basis/level, just one of those things I guess. I'd like to have my own now so I don't need to hire, or the hassle of hiring, and I can head up the A9 more or less when I like.
I'll just be doing general riding, probably no black stuff.... 🙂
How much boarding have you done?
As m-c says, by all means buy a board and bindings but get yourself some of your own boots. They last for ages anyway.
Try here - good advice and a friendly forum Goneboarding
There's also a classifieds section if you want to go 2nd hand. As above, I would definitely get new boots if at all possible but as they are reasonably soft 2nd hand are probably still much better than hiring.
Echo the above. I get sh boards/bindings and was probably lucky as they worked out well for me. But on 2nd pair of new boots - got £180 boots in a sale and they are worth it (odd shaped feet).
IIRC there's an online guide (Burton?) as to weight/height/riding for what size board you should get (look for a wide one if you have big feet!)
+1 for Gone Boarding. This is their equivalent of a what tyre thread.
check the classifieds, I've put a top of the range pair of boots up for sale that you would know had been worn. size 9 if that helps.
I know everyone is advising to buy new but these are as new.
Hi, my housemate does an alternative to board hire in that he'll sell an older but good condition second hand board, boots and bindings waxed and edged and ready to go. If you decide you don't like it he'll buy it back for a bit less or you keep it. Email in profile and I'll forward it to him if you're interested?
boards know your weight and shoe size.... height isnt really their concern.... if you've got over size 11 feet then go for a wide, if size 10 or under then a normal width board should be fine. with your weight i'd say 159-161cm as a board length.
HTH
boots go for a new pair, board and bindings second/3rd hand you can get some VERY good bargains on boards that people bought and only used for a week before realising they're not cut out for it. take someone who boards with you when buying to check them for any signs of cracks or damage that isnt cosmetic.
I've got a pair of Burton Driver X with 2 weeks on them if you fancy? Size 10 UK, I think. email in profile if you want pics or if you want to check anything.

Hey TT, i’m afraid there is no easy answer for this apart from the boots.
I would say get yourself down to a decent board shop get fitted properly and try on as many pairs as you can that is the only way to guarantee a decent fit which you will not get get from used boots. Bad fitting boots will be agony and ruin your boarding and holiday.
With regards to boards the length is a personal preference, all the guides are just that a guide it comes down to so many factors if you go rockered then you can go shorter than you would normally ride, as already mentioned feet size will determine if you need a wide board or not. A short board will be easier to turn than a longer board but has less stability than a longer board, flex is also an issue to stiff and the board will bite back and you will spend more time on your bum, too soft and it will wash out during hard carving.
Now bindings as with boards have many variations regarding stiffness, the stiffer the binding the more responsive they will be, which isn’t what someone with only a couple of weeks boarding would want. For board and bindings research is your friend and don’t be swayed by latest fashion trends, if your going away this year don’t buy now but demo as many as you can when away and then you can make a decent decision.
Not much help I know but we all have our own preference as to what works best and the list will be endless much like asking what is the best full sus bike to ride you will only ever get our favourite not necessarily the best suited 🙂
Thanks for all the help everyone 🙂
