I think I've broken the mechanism in my Tag 2000 series watch. Might have been when I ****ted a rock with it in Wales last week. It's not staying wound for long, and it makes an awful noise when I shake it - although it seems to still keep reasonable time.
Having worn it almost every day for 15 years I think it's time for a change. I'm looking for something plain, simple and not dressy, without a steel bracelet that I'll still feel comfortable wearing in another 15 years. Needs to be strong enough for the occasional rock strike too.
Looking to spend £500 to a grand tops. I'd rather not have another Tag or a Seamaster. Would be happy with quartz. Any suggestions?
I know it's a Seamaster, and I'm not sure whether you mean you want a bracelet or not, but I got a Seamaster Aqua-Terra last year and I love it, pretty simple design, and not too flashy. About £1600 for co-axial automatic or £900 for quartz IIRC.

I've not come across Hamilton before, but their khaki range look interesting. Sorry Ed, I didn't make it very clear - I don't get on with metal straps for some reason, so the usual Omegas are out.
A grand on a watch? **** moi!
I know you said you fancy a change but have you looked into the cost of repair for your existing watch?
Take a look at Ollech and Wajs - excellent movement with the same ETA and valjoux movements as Tags and Breitlings but for a fraction of the price. Excellent watches with a strong military history (the watch of choice for the US military in the vietnam war).

Their divers watches are lovely. I've had a few Tags and Breitlings but I'm just as happy with my O&W M6 Kartago that I have now.
I also don't get on with metal straps, so I replaced it with a Di Modell perforated black leather strap, which looks the nuts. £20 on Ebay.
Yes, I will look into a repair Onza - although from previous experience Tag repairs are a bit eye watering. I know what you're saying tree-magnet - I wouldn't be looking in that price band again if it wasn't an insurance replacement. For some reason it was important to me to own an expensive watch when I was 21 and had no money. Less of a priority now.
Yeah, the repairs can be surprising. My TAG bracelet needed a new clasp a few years back. It was £120. Glad that was under warranty.

That's the coaxial, but you can get quartz as well.
g-shock
I like Sinn watches and have been quite tempted to get one myself. I like the look of them and there is some interesting engineering in some of them. They can be a pain if or when you need a service or repair but still well worth a look.

Claim on the insurance and then replace it with a new bike.

Haha. Watch threads on STW never cease to amaze me. Going by the nature of our sport I always assume there must be some decent money kicking around among mountain biking types, but these threads always shock me with just how much 😀
I've got the bike that I want and no room for any more. I guess it would buy a nice family holiday though... or pay off a chunk of credit card.
Just watch out as the insurance company could just offer you a new watch of the same value before you start spending or financial forecasts of loans that could be paid off.
I'd buy a modern Smiths W10 on a NATO strap. HERE
I was planning to get a repair quote, then call the insurance company before making any decisions. I haven't bought a watch for 15 years though, so thought I'd see what ideas people might have. Some interesting sugestions so far, thanks.
That sticky-out bit on the side looks like it gould get tangled in your scrotum in a bad fall.

Exactly where do you wear your watch?
I stopped wearing a watch after one got tangled in my scrotum.

If you go for a repair I can recommend these guys:
