Tim Martin is one of the main reasons why I choose not to give Wetherspoons my custom. He's treated his employees terribly and as such has become a Tory posterboy, so I for one am experiencing some schadenfreude at the thought of him having to think very carefully about pay and conditions so as to attract staff.
Martin is yet another useful idiot, much like that awful Jane Mummery woman, who has yet to connect the dots between water quality standards, being a third country and not being able to export fish to our closest neighbours. If you concentrate when you hear them speak, you can hear the sound of grinding gears, it's slowly sinking in.
Martin made £50m during the pandemic from a shares sale but Wetherspoons definitely can't possibly afford to increase its wages and conditions to attract more staff, nooo.
If you look at the states right now there's huge pressure towards improving conditions and pay in the service economy post-pandemic, and the predictable tropes of "people don't want to work" aren't biting, more and more people are just saying "well, obviously".
Here? It'll be all British Youth Are Lazy Just Because They Refuse To Work For Less Than Their Rent Costs, and of course We Need Immigrants Also We Hate Immigrants.
That Islington £ gets you 3 Darlington £s or a new Range Rover for the other half and a private Education for Delila and Tarquin at Yarm or Barnard Castle.
Yes darling, but the neigbours are dreadful.
And the farmers again, so many classic sound bites in this video.
If you concentrate when you hear them speak, you can hear the sound of grinding gears, it’s slowly sinking in.
Hope so.
Because I want the grownups to be there, ramming these realisations and contradictions down their stupid throats until their stupid little fantasy is lying shattered on the floor in front of them.
****ing idiots who convinced themselves they were clever.
DrJ the awful neighbours are probably southern incomers.....
It's all good. Lichtenstein, Iceland and Norway are our first trade deal partners.
What tyres for touring Lichtenstein?

How do these arrangements stack up against what we had anyway - by being in the EU?
Meh mere details...main objective of headline and checkbox ticked.
How do these arrangements stack up against what we had anyway – by being in the EU?
According to Norway, not as good as if we (UK and Norway) were both in the EEA/EU.
Even the supposedly staunch remainer BBC were reporting this as a deal that would increase trade. In fact (as Norway pointed out) it’s worse than the deal we had as members of the EU so at best it will just mean trade shrinks a bit less than it would have without the deal. Ho hum.
With Biden's administration pushing the global tax deal, and the UK having to jump in line despite the current governments previous gloryfication of low corporate taxes, the brexit financers are having at least some of their envisigioned benefits taken away from them.
How do these arrangements stack up against what we had anyway – by being in the EU?
We all know that’s a rhetorical question. But this is how the next five [ ten, fifteen? ] years play out. Slowly rebuilding many of the arrangements we have thrown away, and cheering that as a success while others laugh at our self deceit. That and Minford being right… and whole sectors being decimated by the slow pace of the deals and the extra concessions other countries and blocks squeeze out of us as the price we pay for our pompous folly.
the brexit financers are having at least some of their envisigioned benefits taken away from them
Good. Bastards.
They should be glad their heads aren't on spikes somewhere. There's still time for that, though.
The Home Office is at it again…
'Virtue' signalling to their nasty support base. It keeps the racists and xenophobes on-side, even if nothing actually happens as a result.
Tough on fairness, tough on the causes of fairness.
Intrigued by the back story to the Peston tweet - if you have British citizenship and both your parents had British citizenship, what prompted the Home Office to write to them? Are they sending random letters to anyone with a "funny looking" name? It just doesn't bare thinking about
The Home Office Twitter account replied to him. Take a look. Doesn’t really answer any of your questions in my opinion, but hey…
EDIT: I can’t find their response now. 🤷🏻♂️
"It makes clear that if you are a British citizen who has received a letter you do not need to take any action and it can be ignored."
Lol, yeah. Look at the way UK citizens without perfect documentation have been treated in the past when they've gone "this is obviously wrong, I've lived here all my life, paid my taxes, I'll ignore it"
It literally says "our records show you are an EEA or Swiss national"... So either the letter is dishonest and they're knowingly sending it to people whose records say no such thing, or, their records are a disaster and that needs fixing. Data must be "used fairly, lawfully and transparently" which doesn't include misleading people in letters, and must be "accurate and, where necessary, kept up to date"
Obviously be a lot easier for some people to do that than others...
Exactly my thoughts. A European version of the Windrush debacle (that was deliberate, not a mistake don’t forget) will be a worry on the minds of anyone that receives one of these, even if they had understood up to that point that their position and rights were secure. And a similar worry we never leave those do end up applying for a scheme which relies 100% on the Home Office not getting things wrong (an online only proof of status).
Tough on compassion, tough on the causes of compassion.
Plays well to the pitchfork wielders. To hell with accuracy, data protection etc - that stuff is for liberal elite pinkos.
Send 'em back where they came from. Where did they come from?
Basildon.
...
Oh.
Surely a Brexit benefit must have surfaced by now six months in after Ooh 4-5 years of preparation ?

Reminds me of a story told me by someone i used to work with. Inland Revenue used to write to people claiming that they owed X, X being an entirely fictitious but very precise number. eg £473.18. The idea being the recipient would then spend their own time trying to prove the amount wrong and come up with their own figure and so do IR's work for them. Now we have the Home Office writing to people to get them to prove they are british. How many people in the UK could actually prove they are?
On the specifics i heard mention that those born overseas, say armed forces, might be one of the issues here. It doesn't have UK born on your records so you must be an illegal immigrant....

Any Brexity ****wits I have the misfortune to encounter on social media seem to have settled on "we won, you lost". So, basically, 'no'.
I have less and less cause to realise this as I've blocked all the 'friends' who are Brexity. Let them eat cake.
Surely a Brexit benefit must have surfaced by now six months in after Ooh 4-5 years of preparation ?
If your family fortune is based on long distance shipping, you're probably going to do okay out of it. There are a lot of people syphoning off money from the UK state with Johnson and co in power as well, and arguably they'd be getting less money if Brexit hadn't been used for the power grab (and as an amazingly effective get out of jail free card for the 'winners').
On the specifics i heard mention that those born overseas, say armed forces, might be one of the issues here. It doesn’t have UK born on your records so you must be an illegal immigrant…
Unlikely for armed forces. Although I might hunt out my UK consulate birth certificate just in case.
Always irks me those "Our Records show",they pretty much show the records don't actually show much.

I have a UK consulate birth certificate from my dad's time serving Queen and Country.
Been a handy fact when trashing a racist idiot suggesting my fruend - British born of ****stani descent - should go back where she cam from, when I was the one born abroad
We may have had “chaos with Ed Miliband”, but we wouldn’t have been pondering the conundrum of exporting sausages to Northern Ireland (and what that means for unionists living there)…

My wife had a letter like that. Neighbour, who is an accountant, said write back saying you agree, but don't pay anything. She did and heard nothing more.
I see raab has been exhibiting his stupidity - again; this time saying the EU should stop being 'bloody minded' with reference to the NI protocol.
As a lawyer he, presumably, recognises the importance of complying with legislation.
As soon as the transition period ended the UK became a third country with everything that entailed; frost, johnson and the rest knew that.
It's the UK who should stop being bloody minded.
As a legislator, Raab will understand that laws can be changed...
Not unilaterally, they can’t
It’s pretty obvious that Johnson and co never had any intention of implementing the NI protocol, so the ‘deal’they signed wasn’t worth the paper it was printed on
Something that is no doubt being noted everywhere that the UK is trying to do a trade deal with, not least Washington.
Johnson’s casual disregard for any rules and his arrogance in thinking they don’t apply to him (based on all his life’s experiences) is going to have potentially huge implications, particularly as the potential unilateral tearing up of the NI protocol is going to coincide with the marching season. What could possibly go wrong?
Not that the fly-tipped sofa gives a toss about the Good Friday Agreement, of NI generally. None of the Brexiteers ever did. Just more collateral damage in their ridiculous colonial fantasy

He complains about the volume of checks. Checks that he told the DUP would be zero with one face, and told others would be facilitated with non-existent processes and technology with the other face. He goes on to talk up the volume of goods that go between NI & GB… I mean, everyone knows that, which is why they didn’t want checks… HE signed up to put in place checks to avoid having to agree to rUK alignment on standards with the rest of Europe. The checks are of his making. Even though he denied they would be put in place before we left the Single Market, and is now lying when he says they come as a surprise to him.
It’s the UK who should
stop being bloody mindednever have been so stupid to kick our closest partners and allies in the balls in the first place.
But ho hum. Rule Britannia, God Save The Queen, etc.

Boris Johnson confirms that petrol is not combustible, playing with matches is sensible and "what's the worst that could happen?" anyway.....
Boris Johnson was concerned and surprised to learn today that petrol is combustible and that playing with matches is both stupid and dangerous. Despite being told these facts by people many times in recent years....
Y ar thy punishin us?
Spin to win
Sovereignty, classic - RWP lap it up, job done, as you were
I think a lot of the chavvy 'new Tories' are beginning to look a bit down in the mouth about the Brexit utopia.
They're coming to realise they're going to be on the receiving end of a ****ed economy, a mostly illusory (and pissed away) 'vaccine headstart', rising cost of living and the Patels from three doors down haven't been deported yet. And England will be shit in a major football tournament. Again.
🇬🇧🍆💦🇬🇧
It is sort of funny watching and reading about how lots of the G7 coverage that Boris hoped wold be about us being a big player on the world stage has turned into everyone else telling him to stop being a moron and implement the NI Border stuff that he signed the country up for.
On Saturday in a “triple whammy” of meetings, beginning at 8am with Macron, Merkel and then European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European council president Charles Michel, the Europeans’ fury at Johnson for going back on treaty deal became clear. Their annoyance is unlikely to have been lifted by the presence at all the meetings of Lord Frost, the UK’s chief Brexit negotiator, who was wearing union jack socks. Biden had made his views on the threat to the Good Friday agreement known in no uncertain terms before the summit began, issuing orders to the UK side to sort the matter out quickly, through compromise.
At his meeting with the PM, Macron told Johnson, according to well-placed summit sources, that Franco-British relations could only be “reset” if he stood by the Brexit divorce deal he had signed with the EU. “The president told Boris Johnson there needed to be a reset of the Franco-British relationship. This can happen provided that he keeps his word with the Europeans,” the source said. For his part Johnson accuses the EU of being inflexible and “purist” over the legally binding agreements.
When you have your two biggest 'Allies' telling you to stop being a prick you really have fallen to a new low. I just hope that they realise we're in the same situation the US was a year or so ago: get rid of the idiot in charge and the relationships can start to be rebuilt.
Lord Frost, the UK’s chief Brexit negotiator, who was wearing union jack socks.
Bell.
End.
cowardly though isn't it.....
this would have shown 'em what for
As a legislator, Raab will understand that laws can be changed…
He didn't even understand the significance of the English Channel in travel and trade between Britain and Europe!
None of them have "understood" anything about what they've done over the last 5 years. Minor things like rules, consequences, laws and agreements all steamrollered to one side in an orgy of British is Best propaganda, the idea that everyone else will fall into line because "Britain".
Lead by a PM who has been blind to and shielded from consequences his entire life.
