More Brexit joy. Mrs Binners works for a large charity. One of their offices is in Dublin. A member of staff just ordered a laptop from their usual supplier in the UK. Postage was 18 euros, she’s just been informed that she needs to pay an additional 160 euros in import tax and handling fees before it can be delivered

Completely expendable collateral damage of an idealogical project, and those communities will be abandoned to their fate in exactly the same manner as the miners were then

Sort of, except of course the miners were in an already dying trade. Don't see anyone proposing we stop eating any time soon, which makes the whole exercise a whole extra level of inexplicable.

Why did they order a laptop from the UK?!?

Anyway, the most depressing thing about the future for farming is that, like fishing, people were talked into voting for Brexit partly with the idea that they were helping "our" people in that sector. It's the blatant bait and switch that depresses me... promise one thing, deliver another, and get cheered on for it by most of the people you have deceived.

I see the plan is to pay off the farming industry as they shut it down

though it won’t be feeling very ‘creative’ if you’re a farmer or a fisherman, or one of the many other groups who will be the next to get hit with the destruction

I heard on the radio this morning that they seem to be floating the idea of bribing farmers with a huge lump sum to get them to retire early/shut their mouths about how global trade deals will make their businesses bankrupt. In their stead will come a new breed of land stewardship that will new and dynamic (ie not grow food) apparently.

If I was a farmer, looking at what happened to the fish industry, I would be unimpressed

like everything else Brexit-related, slavish following of free-market ideology trumps everything.

I think Cummings was an ideologue, I don't think Johnson is. He'll just say and do whatever gets him likes. That's why he's pleased with the Australia deal cos he knows the idiots will go 'yeah see look we have trade deals' with zero understanding of whether or not it's any good.

I think that Johnson will do whatever he's told - we've a number of libertarian think tanks and a small number of highly partisan media moguls who have a firm grip on Johnson's shoulder. We're at a point where there are calls from the Telegraph to cancel the CBI specifically because they warned about the likelihood of Brexit disaster, many in government and those sponsoring them want to double down and assert their own parallel reality.

We're going to see schisms develop very soon - reportedly George Useless and Michael Gove are pushing for closer cooperation with our nearest neighbours. The brewing spat between Useless and Liz Truss is going to be some sort of idiot face off.

And what do they do after that?

As far as Johnson is concerned.... that is up to them. He just tells whatever lie or pushes out whatever meaningless platitudes gets him from day 1 to day 2 without enough people twigging. That is literally 'it'. They moved the goalposts for requirements for high office to 'adherence to a basic policy that is stupid'. It is no wonder we now have a government of crooks, opportunists and idiots.

Jenrick and his mates will have raging boners right now. 'New and Dynamic' = flogging it off to developers. They don't give a shit what comes later - their pockets are lined, they are sorted. This whole 'new tory' project is a one off smash and grab on the status quo.

They do not care what comes afterwards.

Useless will be happy. With 'opposition' like Truss he can only look good. It is like me beating a turnip at chess and then feeling good about it.

Truss's stupidity is so profound she has an event horizon around her. Not even light can escape.

Few points of order from above.

The Miners were not at that point in a dying trade, decline is more accurate and asa country we were paying more per tonne on imported coal within a year.

There is a massive turf war inside the Tories almost shire v city. However the shires will not loose their seats if the Farmers take the hump, also know they will be compensated Farmers never do badly unlike Miners.

Holding onto power not tradition is the new Tory mantra. Their only problem is "levelling up" and its one they are not skilled to deliver- shifting the Tresuary dept to Darlington is not going to fix it (likley to have a negative impact as the posh houses/school is a relatively small area) and sticking a few pacer trains on the old Blyth line will do nowt.

The type of investment needed is not attractive to the Tories as it is not easily routed into mates companies.

Added to this i don't think Rishi is as sharp as people think, he has had a few opportunities to be creative and simply hasn't its not like he has to deliver anything but he could have painted a picture. He operates like a paymaster general rather than a entrepreneur.

There is a real skills shortage in the Tory party which i think suprised even Cummings. Truss, Eustace, Rishi, Boris, Rabb all fall short and even Frost is barley capable.

+1 couldn't agree more.

re pmqs - once again Blackford asks about Brexit head on and BJ's insouciant reply was something to behold. Something about how scottish farmers should just believe or something and be optimistic.

Starmer was particularly lacklustre today. This is for another thread but we need a plain speaking firebrand to hit home at these. BJ is there for the taking. Even Ed Miliband would wipe the floor with him.

Brexit has seen the competent "one nation" types hounded out of the party and the 80 seat majority from 2019 has seen an influx of newly minted and loyal MPs with local council experience at best. We're seeing a transformation into a one party state along the lines of Orban's Hungary, the implicit message being that if you want to "get on" in life then donate generously to your local Tory party.

Education, culture and whatnot is being hollowed out from within, plum jobs are given on the basis of loyalty, not ability. Patel, Jenrick, Truss, Williamson et al are all as thick as a submarine's door yet doggedly pursue policies that don't make a great deal of sense. It's almost as if their ineptitude is a designed in feature. Technocrats they ain't.

IT stuff can be offshored far more easily and cheaply than most things though?

Yeah, right...

Not as easy as a job producing a physical 'item'.

Of course people are blaming Macron, "it's all the EU's fault" but what do you expect?

"Hey, EU, we want you to do a thing that will do you no good and cost you money, mostly for UK political purposes, and we are offering you nothing in return, all the while making bad-faith arguments and demands over the last treaty we signed with you".

We hold all the cards!

Is that a thing? Even the prospect of easy access to Chicken Parmo isn't going to stop a massive skills exodus from the department. Wasn't aware that Darlo had a 'posh bit', although it's all relative, I suppose, and you could commute from <cough> Barnard Castle.

Agree. Saw this and first instinct was to laugh. But they've got their blue passports.

Perhaps a couple of patriotic red and blue lights could be added to soothe their worries.

Much as the schadenfreude is strong,

It's a bit shit on the other 41%. That's not a huge majority despite what spin doctors might have you believe.

Martin Hutch Darlington West end is posh and cheap, you have Richmond, Northallerton, Yarm within 10 miles, York is 20 mins on the train Durham is the same. Lots of small "country" houses (think 6 beds 6 acres for a lot less than a terrace in Islington)

Private schools by the bucket load Barnard Castle, Yarm etc and some of the best state schools in the UK Polam, Richmond etc. Anyone doing their homework will be shifting North ASAP

I live in Kent but not near that new night time constellation.lol

Trust me, there are a lots here that are not behind the Brexit BS bus, pushing it along after it stalled and caught fire..
That said there are an amazing amount of people that now feel the need to erect (ooh-er) flagpoles with Union flags in their gardens.

Really very,very odd.

Sunlit lowlands.

I take your point, but it hasn't even got a Waitrose. 🙂

Still can't see many takers, particularly among those who have a partner who would need to find a new job as well. The NE has its charms, but can definitely be a shock to the system.

Eye catching comment but...bollocks; provide some current examples and I might re-consider

£800k for a 3-bed terrace in Islington.

£850k for a 6 bed in Darlington, with 6 acres 🙂

Lots of property with a few acres available around Darlington and North Yorkshire (just a mile away over the River Tees) for £650k upwards and some very posh Victorian Terraces in Darlington for £300k

https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/71001079

Right next to Polam Hall school and the Imperial Quarter, a 5 min walk to the station.

Darlington is no Hebden Bridge but the current investment in the Town centre and the redevelopment of the area between the town centre and the railway station is making a huge difference.

I used to live in Gainford between Darlington and Barnard Castle picture Post card Village green and 400k gets you this

https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/71916309

No underground disco admittedly

Or if we have 1.2 million....

https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/80145408

That Islington £ gets you 3 Darlington £s or a new Range Rover for the other half and a private Education for Delila and Tarquin at Yarm or Barnard Castle.

If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck it is most likely a duck.

In this case substitute the word 'pillock' for 'duck', though.

Pillock.

If Tim Martin wants more staff, he can pay more, can't he? Surely this is capitalism in action? Something about being hoisted by his own petard.
