Me and the boy have decided to buy a couple of body boards.

Will the cheapo ones from the beach shop be disastrously bobbins or doesn't it matter?

Fine for your boy. You will probably crack it on the first or second wave. It will still be useable just a bit more flexy!

Bought some cheapish ones last year for the kids and I, still going strong.

The really cheapie ones with cartoon pictures are rubbish. £15-20 normally buys a decent one.

Decathlon if you have one nearby - bigger boards/smoother boards are best

Depends how much you want to get into it, like bikes.
Spend more if you want something you'll spend a lot of time on- for better manoeverability/buoyancy and from a recognised make- but if just for a week, almost anything will do.
