Morning

I'm looking for ideas and advice on blocking up a cat flap or removing the cat flap and blocking up the hole on the door. It's a wooden door with panels.

I was thinking of buying some bits of wood and using the screw holes that are there already to fix said wood to the door. Bit of sealant and some bubble wrap in between for insulation. It's a rented houes so I can't do anything too drastic.

Some scum bag used the cat flap to gain entry to our house last night and nicked the car, my ipod and my gf's purse. W******!

How about asking the landlord to fit a new door??

horse bolted, stable door open....

(your idea sounds fine, anything to block the hole will make your average scumbag move on to the next house)

Was it a pixie burglar?

Ive thought about this as my bike is just inside kitchen area next to our cat flap - will move the keys from the back of the lock now.

It must be a bloody big catflap to drive a car through.

Thanks for taking the pi$$. I knew I could rely on this forum for some comments to cheer me up! (and I'm not being sarcastic).

I'm gonna head down to Homebase now and get some wood to block it up. I'll talk to the landlord about a new door but as they've just paid for the roof to be done I doubt it'll happen.

Unlucky mate. Seriously though. It must be a bloody big catflap to let someone get into the house, unless it was a cat burglar (sorry).

I'm looking at our catflap now and I can't see how even a child could get through. Our cat struggles sometimes although it doesn't help that she is hugely fat.

Mix Kitekat with approx 40% quick setting resin-glue-stuff.
Assemble live cat mid way through cat-flap.
Force feed cat approx half of Kitekat mix.
Wait 1hr / initial signs of bowel movement.
Force feed cat remainder of Kitekat.
Cat-flap blocker should be touch hard in 30mins/draft free in 1hr.

Tools: Long stick, duct-tape.
Time: 2hrs approx.
Difficulty: 1 spanner.

I think it's relatively easy for a determined and experienced burglar to get into a house.

Anyone got one of these on their front door with a letter box in the middle of the door at waist height?

If so, all you need is a golf club and it takes about 30 seconds to get in. Little bit longer if there are bolt locks (broom handle sorts them!).

Disclaimer: I'm not claiming to be an experienced burglar 😯 - when I was a boy I used to forget my keys and rather than sit in the garage after school waiting for someone to get home I'd 'break' in!

Assuming they used the flap to reach in and grab the keys, the problem there isn't "cat flap," it's "leaving the keys in the lock." Been there, etc.

Sorry to hear what happened, anyway. Bastards.

In seriousness, if you've got a hole in your door that's such a big security risk, I wouldn't be taking "no" for an answer there. I wouldn't entertain a bodge job either, it'll take seconds to kick through and you'll be down another car / purse / iPod.

Remove the catflap & use a large piece of checkerplate cut to size & cover the bottom 1/4 of the door. Might even look 'ok' dependent on location/door type, etc.
