No, it's a ridiculous proposal. The prices go up leading to black friday so they can reduce them on the day, I bet if you looked at the prices today, they'd be the same as those a couple of weeks ago. It's marketing and anyone who buys today on purpose has been nabbed.

Plus, today is the 29th November. Christmas is almost a full month away. Anyone who buys for christmas today needs to take a good, long, hard look at themselves.

Mrs Zip is sitting next to me reading the Waitrose magazine.
It proclaims on the front how we are all embracing thanks giving.
We are not, **** off **** off **** off.
If you are desperate to flog stuff why not promote Harvest Festival?

What has this country come to? Trampling over grannies in a desperate panic to get a shitty tesco own brand tv.

Black friday has always been the last friday before xmas where everyone finishes work early, gets pissed and gets into a ruckus whilst queuing for a kebab. Those were the days

what re-assuring answers from STW. Its particularly annoying the John Lewis / Waitrose is so keen on the idea. Is JLP really any better than the other mega retailers? Maybe they're heading for a Tesco like fall as well.

I'm hoping that the stories about fighting etc were just media hype - ie a few scuffles broke out and they reported on that cos it makes a good news story, whereas in actual fact the vast majority of people are sitting at home in despair at how materialistic we seem to have become.
Certainly at work the main commentary was the same as on here...

Didn't get into a fight but got what I thought was a good deal, got an exposure joystick (mk8) for £79 plus I had £15 in the paypal account which I had completely forgotten about, so it only cost my £64. I'm happy 🙂

Did go into pc world as was amazed at the tat that people seemed to be buying 'just because' it had a reduced label on it. Something which wasn't a surprise all the things I wanted to buy, like a new dyson Hoover, where still as expensive as ever!!! Who spends £400 on a Hoover I could get a reverb or two for that!

Who spends £400 on a Hoover

http://www.theguardian.com/business/2014/nov/28/black-friday-sales-police-attend-supermarkets-amid-scuffles

I got a Dyson but I don’t even know if I want it. I just picked it up,” Louise Haggerty, a 56-year-old hairdresser and waitress, said of her 1am trip to the Black Friday sales. “It was mental in there. It was crazy. It was absolutely disgusting, disgusting.”

...

Frustrated with not being able to buy a Blaupunkt 40” TV reduced from £299.99 to £149.99, Haggerty rushed to pick up a Dyson Animal Vac, down from £319.99 to £159.99. “I don’t even know how much it costs, I don’t know even know if I’m going to buy it. I just wanted something,” she said. “There are lads in there three, four, five tellies. It’s not fair.”

🙄 🙄 🙄

Don't try coming over all sanctimonious middle class. This island has a long tradition of brawling at sales, it's just that traditionally it occurs after Christmas. And it's not just the chavs - are you all too young to remember the great Ikea Edomonton store opening?

I bought a toy rocket on Amazon for £5 instead of £10. Does that count?

Some families have a limited budget and the savings on Xmas items make a big difference.

Plus some people just like a punch-up, and a cheap Blaupunkt telly is a bonus.

Refused to do any black friday deals at work yesterday as it's a horrible Americanism that should be banned.

Came home feeling pleased with myself then someone on here pointed out 5:10 VXi's for less than £40 and I cracked...

😳

I got some new wheels for my bike. Was gonna buy them at full price sometime soon, but 25% = £50 so it made sense.
I did that from the comfort of my own home however.

Black Friday was for anyone using m62 yesterday.

or in Bicester, which was gridlocked by all the dead-eyed soulless vapid drones driving to the zombieland that is the outlet village to buy overpriced gaudy 5 year old tat.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-oxfordshire-30245000

Not a proper Black Friday deal but I managed to buy some Oakley Flak Jackets for £19 + £4 postage from Eyewear Outlet (previously PSA'ed here for £50-£55) using an old £50-off code that got pulled just after I used it and before I could PSA it!

Came home feeling pleased with myself then someone on here pointed out 5:10 VXi's for less than £40 and I cracked

You're welcome (I think?) 🙂

I'm old enough to remember mothers scrapping over Cabbage Patch Kids.

Yes. And on Christmas Day they can all gather round and watch the Dyson.

Didn't buy anything but we had some Americans over who hosted a Thanks Giving dinner at our house. Pumpkin pie was surprisingly tasty!

Christmas is almost a full month away. Anyone who buys for christmas today needs to take a good, long, hard look at themselves.

Why? What's wrong with spreading the load?

Xmas isn't like a bill you have to pay. However depressingly that is the way things are now. The spirit of gifting in the truest sense has been lost, it's about the accumulation of material wealth rather than human kindness.

Have this card I made, it's all I can afford, I expect nothing in return other than your understanding and continued friendship, which is a greater gift than overpriced tat you cannot afford. 🙂

*wonders off to find more overpriced tat for xmas*

Please don't use that word 'gifting', it's a stupid word.

?

Or have in mind throughout the year that you might want to buy loved ones gifts, and buy them when you come across them, or something you planned to buy comes up at a good price? I finished shopping for my brother and my better half's Xmas presents months ago, I got her birthday present 4 months before her birthday.

I used to just leave it til Xmas eve, panic, rush to the 24hr garage and end up with porn and charcoal briquettes 🙂
