MegaSack DRAW - This year's winner is user - rgwb
We will be in touch
just pondering, on a rainy cold day when i should really be working, an overnight option plan for a multi day summer ride i'm scheming.
if i went the bivi route, i'm expecting no more than 3 nights, what basic kit would i require and what sort of cost am i looking at.
Light sleeping bag, bivvi bag, light mat, stove & eating stuff.
No idea re costs.
just done a touring set up and have spent:
£350 tent (which u dont need)
£54 rollmat (themarest prolite reduced from £80)
£120 mountain equipment down sleeping bag ( not really as small as u might want)
Trangia or stove and pans £30-£55
Food - supermarket
Big enough rucksack or rack system £100 Id say 25 litres is a sensibile minimum
wouldn't bother cooking for 3 days. where are you going?
i went across spain off-road last summer (5 days) and just picked up food each morning in the first village i got to. bread, fruit, veg etc.
i took a bivvy (terra nova jupiter, £200 or so)
sleeping bag, 750g - more than warm enough for summer
3/4 length thermarest
swiss army knife, spork etc for eating
1 set of cycling clothes (if i did it again i'd take 2), 1 set for the train home/sleeping in. travel towel.
carried in a 25l drybag (ortleib) on rear rack. also used a bar-bag, and a camelbak.
hard to say what it cost all-in, as some stuff was borrowed and other stuff i already had.
there's a website somewhere by a bloke who's obsessed with keeping it as light as possible, quite entertaining to read. i'll see if i can find the link.
cutting your toothbrush in half is a bit too much, nightmare to use 😉

Are you interested in The Welsh Ride Thing...?
Titus - what tent did you buy, and have you used it yet/are you pleased with it? Ta.
If I couldn't be certain of the weather, I'd take.
Bivvy bag, if you're not planning on using it lots then I'd say Alpkit Hunka ... £35 I recall.
Sleeping bag, I prefer down (but many don't for bivvying). Anywhere between £30 and £300 depending what you want. Again, Alpkit would be worth a look if you like the idea of down.
Tarp, in my opinion a tarp is well worth taking. Have a good play with it at home first to get a good idea of how you can set it up in different situations. DD hammocks are about the cheapest for something not designed to cover a trailer.
Sleeping mat, so many different types. I always used a 3/4 self inflating mat but have now changed to an insulated air bed type (Pacific Ourdoors) and the tiny weight increase is well worth it.
Meths stove for brewing (or little gas stove if you like but it won't be as light). Small pan (use it as a cup)
If I could say it wasn't going to rain then I'd leave the tarp at home. I'd also say try and get as much weight off your back and onto the bike ... it makes a big difference over a few days.
Have a look at www.bikepacking.org for some packing ideas.
do a test run with your bike loaded up before taking it out in to the wilds as its likely to mess up the handling....
for a bar bag try Alpkits airlok xtra drybags as they've got loops which help in strapping under the bag (the 13 litre works particularly well..) the best bit is it's £8......

I've done a mixture of trips from 2 day's to 2 weeks over the years and find that its worth trying to minimise the weight you carry in a rucksack / camel back
had'nt heard of the welsh ride thing, blog is interesting. what does it involve?
cheers for the rest, some good info.
its a cross cornwall offroad (via an offlicence before setting down for the night)ride btw, tamar to lands end.
if anyone else fancies it drop me a line.
Yea, flatfish is dead right ... should be .net, sorry.
The Welsh Ride Thing involves ... Depart noon saturday carrying everything you think you'll need for 2 nights out.
Spend Sat, Sun and part of Mon (bank holiday) following a route that you devised over the past month. The route will (should) pass through grid references you were given a month prior.
Spend Sat and Sun night out in the hills, mountains and forests of mid Wales, minding the bears and wolves.
Return to base noon(ish) Mon full of stories of daring do and misadventure. Drink tea and eat cake.
The WRT is not a race as everyone's routes could be different, it's not an enduro, it's not a Trail Quest or a Polaris ... it's most certainly just a, Thing 😉
I'll be posting this years details pretty soon, so if you're interested keep an eye out on the forum. Oh, all money raised goes to the Air Ambulance too.
Wl- a terra nova Voyager XL cheap from field and trek
Impressed putting it up in the house but not used in anger yet, its between two of us so ultralight wasnt as important as a bit of space
I've always want to do a 'thing' so I'm in!
Very underrated 'Things' are!
Cheers, Titus. I'm looking at a Voyager Superlite - teeny bit smaller and less robust, but I want to split it with a mate and get our weights right down for off-roading with just a small backpack each, nowt strapped to the bike. Voyager XL should be v good - it's just that it's not significantly lighter than my existing 2-man tent.
