We will be in touch
An industrious weekend.
Finished the wood store - in the style of contemporary mcmoonterism.
Short of one roofing sheet though, so will have to drop into the builder's merchant next week and grab one to finish off the job. And Ill probably slide another purlin in too.

While building the store I thought it would be a good place to put a bird box. Id been meaning to knock up a few with off cuts from Stoner Jr's tree house.

Terry Nutkins would be proud. But what's the best place to stick them. Is it facing away from the prevailing weather (W/SW here) or facing south for warmth? Ive got a few sheltered spots to put them and each one should easily have enough room for a territory without conflict.
Applauds 🙂
I like the bird boxes, I might add some too. Though birds happily nest in the wood pile anyway.

That's what Id like to try and avoid as we've already had a Robin and a Wagtail fledge from the wood pile in the yard and I dont want to disturb accidentally any nests in future. Hopefully if I can encourage box nesting then the resident bird will stop others from nesting in their territory in the wood pile.
According to an old book at the folk's box should be sited so that it's out of the midday sun. Off to find some spots.
did you dig those uprights into the ground and set them in concrete? I'm contemplating adding to my Chopped wood store with something similar for when we get some un-cut stuff drpped off.
IIRC - the recommendation is south east - but more importantly, away from the prevailing wind
Given the amount of land you've got there - might be nice to put up some owl and bat boxes too?
We dont have any sizeable mature trees nor outbuildings of sufficient height and seclusion for Owl boxes really.
I was obliged to hang 4x bat boxes on the barn during the conversion works by the arsehole scum that is English Nature. Complete waste of time and money just to appease some interfering nutjobs - I managed to move them on via my ecologist so he could reuse them with some other poor victim. As it happens the bats have been more than happy to stay in the building and I think we have increased our bat population. We have Natterers, Pippestrelle and some Brown Long-eareds.
S/SE it is then for the Bird boxes. cheers.
highclimber - yep I just dug some 2' holes, and dropped the old beams in, some temporary supports to keep them plumb and then a bag of postcrete in each. Corner struts keep them nice and solid.
I think they'd be better without the perches, small birds will get in and out ok without them, but predators may use the perches.
Oh and semi-shade, with leafy cover close.

interesting. I was going for the Disney cartoon vernacular... rather than anything scientific. I shall cut them off then...

and a south-south east aspect at least 2m high.
