Can anyone reccomend a nice campsite (for tents) in the area preferably near the sea & surf please.

Not after a big all ents provided place, just nice & with a tad of character.

plus some reccomendations on stuff to see & do would be great.

Got Le Tour pencilled, and we will probably migrate up in to the hills for a few days to stay as well, but can't do much biking as I am recoverring from a broken body.

Thanks in advance,

How close to the sea do you want to be - walk to the beach or drive? There are loads of campsites that are close to the coast as it is a really popular area for Spanish people's summer holidays, but I think only stayed at one that was actually on the beach in that area.

From memory I think that the coast is mainly cliffs and coves so less opportunity for camping right by the sea.

We used a combination of the footprint surf guide and a European camping guide to try to get best combination of camp and surf. We were in a camper rather than a tent.

If you want to camp actually in San Sebastian there is a campsite at the top of the hill overlooking the town from the West. Easy bus ride into town for pintxos and canas.

For Bilbao we stayed in Sopela (Sopelana) - the site was close to the beach. The beach was crowded/lively in the summer as it's an easy train ride from Bilbao. Some very impressive graffiti on show on the train ride.

Can't recommend a campsite, but the coast near Zumaia and Getaria is a lovely area with lots of surfing.

Bilbao - Gorliz - it's at the end of the metro line.

Never used this campsite, but Gorliz/Plentzia are nice places.

Zarautz - between Bilbao and San Sebastian.

I've used this one, very nice location, smart town too.

Hondarribia - just past San Sebastian on the French border. Linked to San Sebastian by train and bus.

http://www.campingfarodehiguer.es/es/ Nice campsite, little bit of a walk into town, (there's a shortcut/steep staircase straight down the hillside).

Again, nice town, good beach. The base for www.basquemtb.com

when you coming over?

Also - Mundaka, near Gernika has a good campsite, apparently it has the biggest left-break in the world, whatever that means.

Mundaka is small and quiet, but linked by train to Gernika and Bermeo which are livelier.

Thanks all,
will check out the links tonight.

Mackem,
We go next w/e for 2 weeks. I was hoping to book some stuff with Basquemtb but the broken collarbone & shoulder blade has put paid to that. Planning on some pootle rides just to get away from it all but nothing involving too much adrenilin sadly.

If you stay in Plentzia/Gorliz or Sopelana there is a fun, not too technical coastal track that takes you to Algorta. It's my regular, local ride.

If you want any help/advice whatever, just ask.
