So then STW, what's the collective agreement to this one
Obviously, there isn't one and never will be when it comes to music.
Few omissions that I thought would have got more of a mention
Iron Maiden, Cream, Judas Priest, Motorhead, UFO, Thin Lizzy, Bad Company, ZZ Top and Rush to name but a few
Do agree that Big Country were excellent live and new album out soon I believe
Pah - no one has even mentioned The Eagles yet 🙄
You CAN'T have Mudhoney on that bloody list!
Sonic Youth 😉
Iron Maiden
Queen
Allman Brothers
Rush
**depending on your definition of "rock"
]To go and see it would be the original Fields Of The Nephilim. For sheer amount of music TheStones, for just ripping up the rule book and giving the world a kick up the backside The Stooges.
Lol at this thread, do calm down chaps. 🙂
A few good calls above but I can't nail it down to one. Just consider myself pretty lucky to have been growing up around some fantastic music that appeared following the Beatles and Stones.
AC/DC...
Motorhead...
Led Zeppelin...
The Stooges...
Big Country ??? 😆
Rolling Stones and Little Feat.
The Kinks.
Zep
Or The Clash
Do you just not like them because they're mainstream? Did you stop liking Jane's addiction when they became popular?
oooooo are you going to turn this into a "you're just a niche whore" argument again like you always do? oh goody 😆
I stopped liking janes addiction when they became crap. Ritual was a terrible album.
and just because a lots of people like something doesn't make them right, just sheeple. 😛
Well in answer to the OPs question about a rock n roll band it has to be AC/DC.
They've stuck to a formula and produced some epic tooooooons. Live they're fabulous. What's not to like.
Don't change the recipe. Don't evolve. Do what you do and do it loud. AC/DC innit.
Don't change the recipe. Don't evolve
go to be Quo then 🙂
Black Sabbath. The most under rated band ever. Should be up there with the Beatles as far as influence on other bands goes.
Couple of mentions for wildhearts earlier. What a great live band.
oooooo are you going to turn this into a "you're just a niche whore" argument again like you always do? oh goody
Well, if the shoe fits.......
and just because a lots of people like something doesn't make them right, just sheeple.
Just because lots of people like something doesn't automatically make it bad either.
I'd have to include both Cream and the Jimi Hendrix Experience. Don't forget that there were quite a few musicians that dropped out of one band and joined another, perhaps moving on to yet another.
buzz-lightyear - MemberLed Zeppelin: mundane dull guff? I think you might be dazed and confused.
LOL'd at that! 😆
Well, if the shoe fits.......
see, you wear shoes...I bet sensible ones from clarks....which is why you like zep. dull dull sensible dull 😉
bare foot on a pogo stick, it's the only way to travel 😆
Cream were amazing. How could I have missed them out...?
I don't get the led Zeppelin thing, never did, they were ok but ever that good IMHO.
Guns n roses had one album that was ace, faded on the next two and then were crap from then on.
Ac/dc just carry on churning the same chords out.
Motörhead have a couple of songs but Lemmy never had enough to claim that title.
Even Aerosmith, kiss, Crüe were all great but not the best.
To be classed as the best, a band has to consistently of blown away many generations of fans with loud guitar. I gotta say Metallica are up there somewhere. But everybody has a personal favourite or three. I'm a bit of a Doors fan, like Deep Purple, really like NIN, Soundgarden, Rammstein... But best??? Hmmm. Not sure any band should have that title.
big country
see, you wear shoes...I bet sensible ones from clarks....which is why you like zep. dull dull sensible dull
Yup, every day I put my Clarks on and drive my Mondeo to my 9-5 office job while listening to a David Gray CD. 🙂
Tricky one - I mean does "best" mean favourite, most successful, or most talented?
Still can't decide on one band.

Strange criteria to have and I am less sure why you think Led Zep dont qualify. Paige will be consistently ranked above Hammett on a top guitarist list
There is no best 'best', just the noise you like the most. 😀
I always find that people who accept the subjectivity of art tend to be the least repressed, very open minded and generally the most fun to be around.
Very difficult to wind up though.

Nothing worse than musicians discussing music - once they've done their bit they should all be locked away 'till next time.
Their opinion is less than relevant, it's in fact positively harmful.
Most of them have become brainwashed by the technicalities of their craft and forgotten how or why they enjoyed music in the first place.
Much the same as working in a chippy for years puts you right off a nice piece of fried haddock. 😀
THIN LIZZY - any of the girls want a little more Irish in them ?!
Some very strange candidates ^^.
Out of interest I've just looked up biggest selling artists WIKI and some of it is bizarre. I can understand loads of MOR/mainstream in there but The Backstreet Boys sandwiched between Barbra Streisand and Bon Jovi at 130 million units! Seriously WTF 😯
Personally, I couldn't even begin to say who was 'best' as there is too much to take into account for different eras and musical progression.
One of the best bands I ever saw live. IOM TT '77 absolutely blew the doors off
Junkyard - MemberPaige will be consistently ranked above Hammett on a top guitarist list
Hammett's a pretty boring guitarist (he seems to be branching out now mind). Very skilled, but not really inspiring. (I've a sneaking suspicion Hetfield's got him beat now, maybe not as a technician but as an artist)
But that doesn't stop him from blowing away many fans with loud guitar
Rock... Prog rock, metal, r&b, where do you start? The Who are one of the best rock bands I've seen live and they were mods, not rockers! The likes of Sabbath, Purple, Humble Pie, Uriah Heap, were laying down the foundations for the 70s/80s rockers like G&R, AC/DC, etc.
Best? Depends on what halluciegenics you were on at a moment in time... 8) But Led Zep are right up there.
Led Zep? Sorry, I don't wear one of those suit jackets with leather elbows and I'm not a geography teacher 😀
I'm surprised they are mentioned more than Sabbath, but I guess this is STW 😉
Napalm Death!
I think there's a good clue in a just a few of the many songs with Rock in the title... (let alone the mention of Rock in songs, of which there are loads)
Let there be Rock
Rock n Roll aint noise pollution
Rock n Roll Damnation (a defo fav of mine)
Rock n Roll train
Rock n Roll Dream
Hard as Rock
Rock n roll singer
Rocker
And of course last but not least
For those about to Rock
It's ACDC for me ... pure "Rock"... not metal, not punk, not verging on prog rock like sone of Led Zep ... and certainly no ballads.
Just ROCK
Best current band - RUSH
Best historic band - FREE
Thin Lizzy for me.
Modern rock - Airbourne
Groovy stuff - Alabama 3, Spritualised, Lupine Howl
All time favourites
Ac/dc, Rush, Black Sabbath
Napalm Death!
I love 'em, but grindcore isn't "rock" by any stretch of the imagination.
As musicians? Rush
As a live band? Thunder
As the epitome of what RAWK and ROLL is all about? G 'n R.
Basically, mogrim, all you like is 12-bar blues, anything more complicated than that is
pretentious tedious crap loved by musos. Awful, awful rubbish, only outdone by Pink Floyd.

🙂
I like complicated music too. But not complicated for complicated's sake.
Most of us, on the other hand, can cope with, and appreciate a wider variety in our music. And are old enough to remember how much of a revelation Zeppelin were at the time.
Nobody's mentioned the Pixies yet, or Mudhoney, or Pavement. Or Screaming Trees; now there's a bloke with an awesome rock/blues voice!
Zeppelin may have been a revelation at the time, but having been subjected to their music at various times, usually by wannabe guitar players, I can safely say it's dull. It hasn't aged well. The Pixies, however, are a different matter. But somehow I don't think of them as a "rock" band, it's an image thing: they seem to lack the alcohol-fuelled-throw-the-tv-out-the-hotel-window style that a true rock band should have. Which is why I didn't mention them.
And yes, this is all subjective opinion. It's right though 🙂
The Pixies, however, are a different matter. But somehow I don't think of them as a "rock" band,
that's because they're an indie band 😀
that's because they're an indie band
Yeah, that's sort of what I meant. But why are they indie (alt-rock, whatever) and Faith No More are clearly rock? (And should have been mentioned earlier)?
I rest my case m'lord.
My guitarist is better than yours Wah Wah Wah. Lol.
For me it might be The Fall... In fact I'm not playing too many to choose from. stupid bloody question in my opinion. 😉
Yeah, that's sort of what I meant. But why are they indie (alt-rock, whatever)
genre innit. All based on music press/labelling, fan base and the tribalism of humanity.
considering that under the "best rock band" so far we've had:
Rock
glam
death metal
Industrial
Goth
punk
post punk
indie
alt-rock
grindcore
grunge/sub-pop
Heavy metal
oh and bilge (led zep) 😉
