considering that under the "best rock band" so far we've had:
Rock
glam
death metal
Industrial
Goth
punk
post punk
indie
alt-rock
grindcore
grunge/sub-pop
Heavy metal

oh and bilge (led zep)

🙂

Nice list, though you've forgotten big-hair rock.

Jason and the Scorchers are a great rock n roll band and live they are exceptional.

Hanoi Rocks were staggering live but the albums were awful.

Metallica died after ..and justice for all IMO and have been on a downward trajectory ever since. St Anger anyone 😯

Nice list, though you've forgotten big-hair rock.

AKA - Poodle-perm rock, cock rock, glam-metal, hair rock etc.

See the follwing as examples;

Poison
Mötley Crüe
Cinderella
Twisted Sister
W.A.S.P.
Warrant
Europe
The Quireboys
etc
And, nu-skool cock rockers, Steel Panther

None should ever really be considered to be that good, I'd say! Great fun, but not in the "best" category. Unless it's for services to spandex and hair spray. 🙂

Bon Scott era AC/DC

ahhhhh glam, see it's already on the list.

'Ritual was a terrible album'

compared to stuff like pigs in zen and mountain song, it was just meh..a sign of the downward spiral to things like porno for pyros. Strays had moments of greatness though.

Glam is different to big-hair rock

T-rex and Bowie were glam

Def Leppard, Bon Jovi, Ratt etc.. were big-hair rock 8)

Good list Tazzy 😀

I'll chuck one in for the Welsh lads - Man. Got to be some Deke Leonard fans outside of Merthyr 😉

I see Free have been mentioned a couple of times; one of my favourite bands but again, not sure I'd class them as rock

Def Leppard, Bon Jovi,
noooo they were fribber rock, for sweaty blokes in blue denim with bad fringes.

But yes there was 70's Glam and Glam-Rock in the 80's wouldn't use the phrase "cock rock" as smashed gladys were amazing and had a girly singer 😀

No such thing as a "best" band. All of them influence each other, all of them would probably cringe at the thought of being best.

Tbh when I turn the volume up and just jam away, I'm the "best"... It's all about just giving it some. LOL

I always find that people who accept the subjectivity of art tend to be the least repressed, very open minded and generally the most fun to be around.
Very difficult to wind up though.

Paige will be consistently ranked above Hammett on a top guitarist list
Nothing worse than musicians discussing music - once they've done their bit they should all be locked away 'till next time.
Their opinion is less than relevant, it's in fact positively harmful.
Most of them have become brainwashed by the technicalities of their craft and forgotten how or why they enjoyed music in the first place.

1.I meant fans not musicians
2. you are free to ignore the experts in this area as you are in any field
3. You seem to have failed to accept the subjectivity of art with your less than tolerant views of those who actually create it

See if you are livid yet or laughing 😉

Smashing Pumpkins! (I'm clearly born of a different era to most of STW, but I'm right!) Edit: I do wish they'd stop releasing awful new stuff though, weakens my argument a lot!

Also, Foo Fighters died for me the day I saw them get blown away by Queens of the Stoneage live in Hyde Park, not even that big a Queens fan but they were amazing and I could have happily left in the middle of the Foos.

Can't better Tales of Brave Ulysses. Always loved the chemistry of a good combo when talking about rock bands. Keyboards don't count sorry! Something about vocalists that play bass, a drummer and one guitarist. Raw and simple. Keep it simple is the way .

The Kinks started it with You Really Got Me, then maybe McCartney (yes, really) with The Beatles Helter Skelter. The Yardbirds --> Led Zep at about same time as Deep Purple and B'ham blues band Black Sabbath. My first singles were Paranoid (Sabbath) and Black Night (Purple).

Sisters of Mercy

have you seen them lately? as in since 1985? one word - karaoke

Seen them 3 times since 95. Saw them last about 5 years ago, Shepherds Bush I think. We were on the top level and there was so much smoke from the machine all we could see of the stage was some flashing lights, sort of like driving through awful fog and barely being able to see lights from an oncoming car.

Previous to that saw Sisters about 96/97 at Brixton Academy. That was ok but they played the songs at high speed and my ear drums almost burst lol.

Their best gig for me was about 2000 at 1st Avenue, in Minneapolis, MN USA). There was only a few hundred people. I was sat at a table drinking beer and Andrew E was singing on stage about 20ft from me, so it was like having my own private gig. AMAZING.

+1 for Sonic Youth, awesome. I had some album (or knock-off) of theirs called Sonic Death, weird and trippy but you need to be a real fan to get anything out of it 🙂

"Also, Foo Fighters died for me the day I saw them get blown away by Queens of the Stoneage live in Hyde Park, not even that big a Queens fan but they were amazing and I could have happily left in the middle of the Foos. "

And you where surprised ??

QOTSA only allow Grohl to be their guest drummer…. Fair play mind he can thump a tub and looking forward to the new Queen’s album with grohl back on board.

We all like the FF but a lot of their stuff could be used on a Gillette advert .... "The best a man can get" … type thing.

To be fair, QOTSA are no way near as good on album as they turned out to be live, so yes I was!

Nah, urban myth; Ray Davies played the rock riff.

Thought it was Dave who played the riff on that? 😀

Laughing WITH everyone on this thread Junky.
Great to hear so many different opinions.
Always end up trying bands others have recommended on these threads too.

Keep it up everyone.

I stand corrected, it was indeed Dave. Apparently he sliced the cone of his speaker with a razor blade to achieve the sound.

I agree with monkey boy - Pearl Jam for all time greats!

More recently, The Band Of Skulls has not been out of my CD player. Rival Sons can be recently added as well.
Worth a check!

Surely john Mayall 'started' it by employing eric Clapton, Peter Green,Jack Bruce et al?

Cream must be near the top

What about Rory Gallagher? No-one comes closed these days, IMHO.

Jimi Hendrix?

Humble Pie?

Rolling Stones?

When i listen to some of the newer bands (foo Fighters RH Chilli Peppers etc etc, they all sound the same .....)
