AC/DC might be the most overrated band of all time. Few good tunes but nothing original or interesting and a singer that sounds massively constipated.
Totally agreed with the AC/DC, Foo Fighters and Metallica, I'm loving Iron Maiden and Rammstein at the moment.

😀
Yeah, but they rock.
Unlike Metallica, who sound like a bunch of bankers singing about their bonus.
MC5
Husker Du
The Stooges
The KLF 😉
Who can say?
Sabbath for starting it all
AC/DC for doing it properly
Motorhead for keeping it real
Iron Maiden for sheer panache
Metallica - for keeping it going after 30 years
GnR - for style if not consistency
Oh and slight wild card, Queen's early stuff was pretty heavy but they dominated 80's chart rock and Freddie is irreplaceable
Led Zep.
If this threads indicative of the STW average age ...then we're all old farts 🙂
A great number already mentioned deserve a share of the crown.
( Led Zep or perhaps even Deep Purple ... Both magnificent in their prime)
Chris
Hmm, difficult, but I'll lob in...
Sabbath
Aerosmith
Metallica
Rammstein
Tigertailz
I'll also be back later to change my mind loads of times!
Having a more alternative definition of Rock I’d have to say -
Sisters of Mercy
The Mission
The Cult.
Not mentioned yet, but what about Queen?
Guns n Roses for me-I'm not a huge fan, but they seem to have done the whole Rock Band/ Rock Star thing as well as anyone, and their first albumn is a top 10 of all time for me.
Metalica or ACDC...
Not been mentioned, maybe for a reason but, The Who?
Actually I can kind of see why...
G'n'R were a great band, but ruined by that nightmare of a singer.
Like listening to a goat being strangled by a bungee.
Wrong drugs too - only Dylan, Lou Reed, Charlie Watts and Miles Davis made decent music on heroin.

Brilliant band - how could we leave them out?
Small Faces too.
And Roxy - amazing band.
And don't forget ABBA - superb band, no snobbery here.
Humble Pie, Zep, The Who, Little Feat
Rainbow from the Rising and Onstage era
The Georgia Satellites. Three chords 'n' the truth... 8)
Led Zep, AC\DC, Jimi Hendrix and early Kings of Leon
slayer
Whilst there are some truly great rock bands I think it has to be Led Zep and by some margin - about 100 million albums - then again both Elton john and the Beatles outsell them so read in to that what you want 😉
Very few rock bands are liked by anyone who is not into mainly rock - yes I mean Metallica, and AC DC in particular- and Zep are the best in this respect.
Without them we would not be having this chat either 😛
DP
Can I add Dead Kennedys and New Model Army (alternative rock).
only Dylan, Lou Reed, Charlie Watts and Miles Davis made decent music on heroin.
Charlie used briefly in the 80's, hardly the Stones best period. Now if you'd said Keith you could have had Sticky Fingers and Exile On Main Street and probably Let It Bleed too.
I think it has to be Led Zep and by some margin
nah jethro tull were better musicians by a country mile. Led zep was rock for those who didn't actually like rock music but wanted the image.
Jethro Tull are also a superb band but you would be in the minority with that view but i would not diss them one bit.
Everyone liked Zep like everyone likes* marley [ you can argue he was not proper reggae as well and others were better]
* ok not everyone but you get the point.
Free.
AC/DC Led Zep were great but not an out and out rock band.
nah jethro tull were better musicians by a country mile.
Being a decent musician has cock all to do with rock'n'roll. 😀
Lesley Garrett can hit notes more accurately than Janis Joplin, doesn't mean she's a 'better' singer.
Define "rock"
I agreed with some of the above. My tastes vary but for me they are some of the following:
A Perfect Circle (awesome band).
Cranes
Hootie and the Blowfish
Sisters of Mercy (seen them 3 times live, amazing)
Yo La Tengo
New Radicals
Queens of the Stone Age
Rammstein
Soundgarden
Screaming Trees
Pearl Jam
and so on ......
One of the best live bands i've seen several times, Big Country. Gave it all
AC/DC Led Zep were great but not an out and out rock band.
Yes that mass appeal and being liked by non rockers really lets them down 😕
Define "rock"
If you gotta ask you will never know 😉
graham of redmarley - MemberOne of the best live bands i've seen several times, Big Country. Gave it all
They're on stage right now in Dunfermline I think!
I'll go with Dinosaur Jr. for my kind of rock.
Probably The Stooges imo.
I also like Lynard Skynard, The Pixies, Motorhead and Husker Du (sorry cannot do umlauts) but would not try to argue they were the greatest).
Sisters of Mercy
have you seen them lately? as in since 1985? one word - karaoke 🙁
loved them around the time of Black October/ FALAA tour but since Eldritch sacked the rest (ie The Mission), his live shows have been cr@p.
speaking of The Mission, however, I'm tempted to shell out for FOTN + The Mission October 2013. Would have liked to see The Cult, Killing Joke + The Mission but Jaz Coleman went walk about..again..
my favourite ever gig:
Sisters Of Mercy
New Model Army
Skeletal Family
c1983-4 Huddersfield Town Hall. That was an amazing gig.
FOTN + The Mission + Killing Joke would be equally amazing if it could ever happen.
There is no possible good argument against The Stooges
Yeah. I meant to say that 🙂
FOTN - just awesome live always way better than the sisters, who just sort of stood there.
NMA- brilliant band
for me my fave ever gig was testament, suicidal tendencies, slayer and megadeth on the same bill, Clash of the titans. (megadeth were a bit poo, but there always were iffy)
or
FOTN, Janes addicition and creaming jesus at the brixton academy before janes were really known in the UK.
it depends on the term rock, for me, it's a bit light and fluffy radio friendly pap. Now most of the great bands mentioned so far have been metal: motorhead, maiden etc... or punk/alt like the stooges. husker du etc...
so led zep are the best "rock" cos they are bland guff for the mundane and dull. 😉
Why the need to slag off the people who like a certain band? Bit of a crass generalisation when they have so many fans no?
Do you just not like them because they're mainstream? Did you stop liking Jane's addiction when they became popular?

Led Zeppelin? God no, pretentious tedious crap loved by musos. Awful, awful rubbish, only outdone by Pink Floyd.
You might, possibly, have had a point, until you wrote:
GnR, ACDC. Or early Stones.
Your problem with Zep stems from the fact that you're obviously not old enough to have been around when they started, so have absolutely no proper perspective on what else was around at the time. The 'musos' then would have been into jazz, or possibly the Beatles or Beach Boys. Zeppelin were a folk band with amplifiers.
Actually, the musos would have probably been into King Crimson, lots of complicated jazz rhythms and clever lyrics.
Basically, mogrim, all you like is 12-bar blues, anything more complicated than that is
pretentious tedious crap loved by musos. Awful, awful rubbish, only outdone by Pink Floyd.
Most of us, on the other hand, can cope with, and appreciate a wider variety in our music. And are old enough to remember how much of a revelation Zeppelin were at the time.
Nobody's mentioned the Pixies yet, or Mudhoney, or Pavement. Or Screaming Trees; now there's a bloke with an awesome rock/blues voice!
Led Zeppelin: mundane dull guff? I think you might be dazed and confused.
OK. So which part of Motorhead don't you understand?
Led Zeppelin are one if my favourites as are Nirvana, The Stooges, the Rolling Stones, The Small Faces and (castigate me forever) U2. But the best rock and roll band of all time - has to be The Who!
