Leather one filled with sand is best, although weighs a lot so make sure support is good. Light weight plastic/cloth ones tend to move around too much if your really going for it. Half hour on the punch bag is a great way of building stamina, if you havent already, look at also getting a skipping rope, another easy way for building fitness.
GlennG do you want him to break his hand? Have you ever tried punching a sand filled punchbag? I used to train on a 80kg sand filled bag and you have to be very careful.
Turnearound, if you're going to go down a sand filled one then make sure you get some 'bag mits', these are light weight boxing gloves, the slip on type like these:

Take it very easy at first; the risk will be that you break your wrist as it buckles when you contact the bag. If you've done some training before then you'll be fine but otherwise it's not as straightforward as you think.
There is a very definite technique to punching, staying loose until impact, focusing beyond the point of contact, keeping your elbows in, strength in the wrist, keeping your guard up etc. It's an excellent work out though - try doing 30 second bursts to begin with then build from there. You'll soon develop the deepest awe for the fitness levels of boxers.
geetee1972, yes have a sand filled bag in my garage and does the job fine, have trained with one for years (3rd dan at kick boxing & boxing since I was a kid) tried a cloth version filled with lightweight material and just moves around too much.
Glenn - completely agree with you. I'm also Third Dan in Goju Ryu Karate (although I've lapsed considerably over the least few years) and have done a lot of training with boxers as well as with my instructor. I was thinking that if you hadn't done that kind of thing before, going straight to a sand filled bag might be a too much too soon.
Got a heavy bag sat in my garage with a frame for it if you're interested
Drop me a mail to ken_shields@btopenworld.com if you're interested
Go for a leather bag and fill with cloth, material, etc untill your used to it and then fill with sand if the bags moving around too much, worth getting a good leather one over a cloth or plastic one if you can find one 2nd hand. If youve never tried it before either gets some lightweight mits and/or some boxing wraps, these will give a little protection to the knuckles and will also give a bit of support to the wrists (can pick up a set for £5). Focus mitts is another good stamina workout (if youve got someone to train with)

the deepest awe for the fitness levels of boxers.
Agreed. Do wear bag mitts. Even then I hurt my knuckles sometimes. Practise combos with a mix of fast/light and heavy blows. Aim to strike specific points. Let the bag move around and move with it.
Used to do this as part of my own training. It's designed to do a number of things, principally teaches you how to focus and time your punching, but it also generates calcite deposits on your punching knuckles and calluses on the skin, sort acts like armor.

These are Sensei Moria Higaonna's hands:
I trained with this guy from time to time.
guys, fantastic advice, much appreciated...i used to use a bag for training many moons ago before cycling completly took over....
I want to build stamina and fitness as ive been concentrating too much on the bike and am getting a little tired of it (the thought of an hour session on the turbo makes me shudder!!)...so i'll give this a go...
oh, damn right im getting mitts!!
oh forgot to ad, anyone know of trainig programs for using the bag similar to turbo training programs as i'm not a third Dan in anything!
These are Sensei Moria Higaonna's hands:
Is it me, or does anyone else think this guy is a pillock?
OK OK, he's probably a very good fighter and he can punch and kick and all that, but if ruining his hands like that is supposed to be some sort of big achievement, IMHO, he's a pillock...
my god, she even looks stunning when shes been bashed around a bit.
shes quite possibly at the top of my lust list. (and its a VERY long list)
I use to use a Canvas bag filled with leather off cuts.
Mr Whoppit - it's a level of commitment and dedication to training that few people ever get close to; probably borders on OCD. Furthermore he is now in his late 60s and still trains around four to six hours per day, every day. BTW his hands look way scarier in real life; the photo isn't very good and when you see them up close, it's like they're made of stone. There's nothing technically wrong with them though, which is to say that they aren't 'damaged', just calloused.
There was a TV series called the way of the warrior made back in the late 80s with Denis Waterman narrating. Each episode examined a different martial art and for Karate they filmed Higaonna Sensei. If you can find it on YouTube, it's quite an eye opener.
My daughter has an old sand filled leather one which is nice, and heavy enough for foot work.
lol @ woppit
Chill out fella, so his hands look ugly, so what - I doubt they'll kill him.
speedball?or one of those balls on elastic floor to ceiling?
Kidnap a local chav or bike thief,a very satisfying punch bag i feel.
