MegaSack DRAW - This year's winner is user - rgwb
We will be in touch
I've only recently dabbled in smartphones as work provided (and paid for) a non-smart phone. Got a secondhand 5800 a while ago and have got to quite like having it around. Now thinking of passing the 5800 on to the wife and getting something new.
I'd like a Nokia for two main reasons (1) I like Nokia Maps and the free SatNav and (2) I've always had Nokias.
Priorities are I guess all the main reasons for having one of these things and in no particular order: web browsing, music, quality camera.
So what's best at the moment or does anyone know of anything super on the horizon?
*DO NOT* buy an n97, I hate mine 70% of the time (the rest of the time I like it)
just got an N86 8Mp
pretty impressed, i guess it technically counts as a downgrade in the cycle of the N series (had 95 then 96) but it is just an improved N95 really and as the N95 was the best phone i've ever used (albeit a bit slow) i plumped for the 86
camera is excellent and the return of the lens cover is extremely welcome. good internal memory and maps/email/skype all work well
web browsing is faster than previous models, pan/zoom is smoother and you can get opera browser for it but it seems to be a bit unreliable at the moment, i've gone back to standard web browser
There is the N8 coming out which is supposed to use their updated operating system and will have a capacitive screen, good camera dn all the other usual stuff. Gonna be pricey i'd imagine, which was the good thing about the 5800, its cheap and does most things pretty well.
you can get opera browser for it but it seems to be a bit unreliable at the moment, i've gone back to standard web browser
I've gone over to Opera for my 5800 and can't see myself going back to the standard one. In fact I was so impressed with Opera that when I started having odd IE& problems I switched to it on my laptop too.
(this message brought to you by Opera)
i use skyfire brower on mine works well. im looking at what to get next n8 looks good but not sure when its out but im kinda getting swayed towards an android phone tho i do like the free sat nav on nokia
Mmmmm..... just looked at the N8 and have to confess to a small moist moment.
Think I'll stick with what I've got for now and save my pennies to see if it's as good as it looks when it launches.
Love my E72. Big enough screen, full QUERTY keyboard that works through my waterproof pouch, excellent camera, brilliant battery life and very slim so easy to carry in trouser pocket. If you are not used to the Symbian S60 operating system it takes a little getting used to all the short cuts available, but once sorted it's great
🙁
My 5800 died today.
Will hopefully get it fixed / replaced.
Best thing on it is Google Maps.
E71 for me, from using 6310i's for years.
But its brill; GPS, Nokia Maps, Internet, email and Nokia Sportstracker - plus I can use it as a free internet modem with my laptop. And battery life is no too bad.
Plus its Nokia, so even I can work my way around it.
really like the e55
As allread said the new N8 is coming out soon and it looks quite good (but with the new OS it could be a bit buggy)
I have a X6 and i love it 🙂 i have only had it around 3 months and when i got it it was the best (for me) on the market.
Stay away from the N97(or mini) it is meant to be full of bugs.
Second E71. Brilliant device with gps, sports tracker, Nokia Maps, FM radio, syncs with all my work mails, calendar, contacts, photos, vids, podcasts the list goes on.
just typing this on my E71 via WIFI. Who needs an iphone!
To be honest the 5800 has way surpassed the N95 I used to have and I look forward to the N8. There are plenty of outdoor GPS apps for the 5800 too such as Timbrel outdoors however some have issues registering it.
I have an N97 Mini and it's a pile of crap.
After going from Nokia to Sony Ericsson a few years ago (normal type phones), I swore I'd never go back to Nokia - why I didn't listen to my better judgement I don't know.
It constantly freezes, Bluetooth is forever dropping off when I'm using handsfree in the car and won't reconnect until I reboot, the user interface is horrible, I have to reboot it 3 times a day on average, the screen is nigh on impossible to see in sunlight, it refuses to play videos unless they were shot by the phone itself.
I went in to a Vodafone shop yesterday and moaned about it and was told to update the settings and it would be fine. Guess what - no updates available.
Horrible phone - I wish I got a SE, or a HTC.
Personally, after my experience with a N85 i'd give Nokia a wide berth for another year or two (or forever?), while they catchup with iPhone/HTC.
Reason (2) you cited (i've always had Nokia's) is the only thing which has kept that company going for some time. Maps on the Desire work great.
