I heard David Walliams on Desert Island Disks a couple of weeks ago and one of his choices was Nick Cave. So how the hell have I managed to go all this time without listening to someone this good. He's playing now on spotify, if your not signed up yet your missing out, and it's a very long time since I've heard anything that's really blown me away. Well this has. So what did you discover that had been hiding in plain sight for years?

Isn't Latitude that big middleclass eco-yuppy love in in a village in Suffolk?

Not sure if they're well known over here, but I'll mention them anyway just in case they aren't 🙂 Powderfinger & Grinspoon, a couple of legendary Aussie bands! Oh, and Wolfmother 🙂

Saw lots when I was at Uni (16 years ago) when I was well into Punk/Hardcore/Indie. Since then maybe only a few - John Spencer Blues Explosion, Son of Crackpipe. But very few others, BTW Grinderman are awesome! 😀

Although I was already familiar with The Birthday Party, I first heard of Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds in 1985 - my g/f at the time had a copy of The First Born Is Dead.

I think I still have a cassette copy of that, must dig it out & see if it still plays. If it does, it's going onto CD, as I doubt the original is still available

I heard the blues by accident as a child-loved it and bought a guitar and jam now and again still.

All the rest was 80's to modern chart, older sister/musical Dad-rock and goth and 50's 60's 70's radio or MTV Europe/USA etc even classical music was easily found.

But the Blues was a discovery that no one shouted about or marketed mainstream.

The stuff still kicks. I love it.

Uncle John and Whitelock. I know nothing about them, other than they sound awesome and their cover Robert Palmer's addicted to love is genius.

Saw a bunch of Canadians called Fu**ed Up at Brum Academy last night - never heard 'em before...
Total hardcore 3 guitar noise and a very sweaty, semi naked, bearded fat man screaming his guts out whilst wandering through the audience using a 3 mile long mic lead. Ace. If that's yer bag, obviously.

Neutral Milk Hotel's "In the Aeroplane over the Sea" amazes me everytime I listen to it.

The Black Keys - "the big come up".

I found a blank looking cd-rom down the back of the dashboard of a motorhome I once owned. I could see it had something burnt on it, so I picked it up and took it in the house (on reflection, hoping for porn). I put it on the computer and it contained both of these albums. I was instantly hooked.

I discovered this band from Manchester yesterday. They had an ace tune about smoking and drinking. Oasis, or something..?

Seriously tho, I've always found most of my music by artists referencing, covering, featuring or name-dropping each other, or by being mentioned in similar or new terms in articles. To some extent they've all told me about the next one. Even if I've gone out on a limb with a purchase I've in some way heard the name or something about them before I buy. Very little of what I like is as a result of someone telling me about it. It's not like unheard-of musicians pop up in front of me unannounced as I walk down the street.

Ahh, the Seal Cub Clubbing Club, what a name, and what are they doing now? A band I saw the other evening supporting Howling Bells, (now there's a band, and a singer!), called The Joy Formidable. Never heard of them before, totally blew me away. A three piece from North Wales, with a really cute singer/guitarist, shades of Curve, My Bloody Valentine. Can't wait for them to play Bristol again.

The John Butler Trio. I liked Earthbound Child on The Collective and have bought a couple of albums since. Excellent.

New Model Army
Julian Cope

Both been churning stuff out for years just under the radar.

Most of my random discoveries have been at festivals. Saw Laura Marling last year having vaguely heard of her, and she was ace.

All time favourite was when I was 14. My brother had ordered Selected Ambient Works on import, but was seduced by something else when we went to pick it up. I decided to take a punt on it, never having heard of this Aphex Twin bloke. Probably the most significant thing I have ever bought.

Maybe under your radar 🙂

I discovered a rapper-type bloke called Sage Francis quite late in his career, his band Non-Prophets had already come and gone. But he's a lyrical genius.
Not much escapes my radar though, if it does it's probly crap 😉

So, duntmatter, did you like Lazer Sword?

Godspeed You Black Emperor - turned on to them thanks to a bike frame builder.

Labradford - ditto

Stars of the Lid - and again

Quite a change from my normal metal / punk fare.

Magnetic Fields.

I can listen to 69 Love Songs over and over again.

Only found out about him by reading Pitchfork's 100 best albums of the year - which I think qualifies as not being told.

The Beta Band.

Given the "3 ep's" album years ago as a birthday prezzie from work.
Still my favourite band.

And if you haven't heard any Half Man Half Biscuit recently, you're really missing out - Achtung Bono & Cammell Laird Social Club are particular favourites. Just as funny as they always were, but they can actually play their instruments now......

Anyone checked out Airborn Toxic Event? Awesome first album, best debut i've heard in a long time. Check out 'Gasoline' for a first listen. Also a band that don't get enough attention are Wilco, one of the best bands ever imo

A few years ago I would have been suggesting Sigur Ros.

But now it seems every BBC documentary has to include them.

Other suggestions would be:

The Handsome Family
Lambchop
