I nominate this as I always found the production on the studio albums lacking. This is the real deal and headphones on you get really sucked into it.

The Alchemy Live by Dire Straits. Also the live side of Ummagumma by Pink Floyd, but that's not a live double album, strictly speaking.

Alchemy is super.

Love the GnR Live Era album, though.

Especially for the epic jam session version of Move to the City. "Ladies and gentlemen, the band!"

I was going to say Cream, Disraeli Gears but that's one album live/ one album studio so doesn't count (good shout on Allman Brothers above though).
I have Alchemy and Babylon by Bus in my vinyl collection and I'll raise you by The Who, Live at Leeds 8)

Interesting that the big live double albums all seem to be from an earlier era; it's almost as if with the advent of stadium venues the gigs have got smaller! Or is it down to the fact that you can get more onto a CD than you can on a single piece of vinyl?

Seeing as not all those albums up ^ are double albums i'll include some of my my favourites, not rock music so perhaps controversial for a live album.

Jeff Mills - Blue Potential with Montpellier Orchestra

I'm heading to the Paradiso (Amsterdam) to see Nils Frahm in march…..gonna be quite a trip 😉

My second choice. Once again you get the full oomph of the song and not the tinny studio production.

Decade of aggression by slayer.

Can't understand why people like metallica when slayer are so much better.

Live in a world full of hate by sick of it all is also a goodun.

If you only listen to one Van Morrison album (and you really need to hear more) then make it this one from 1973. Nobody does emotion like Van.

No excuses, it's here:

Mano Negra: "in the Hell Of Patchinko" is one of my favourite records ever.
Also despite the mixed reviews I like "stage" by Bowie.
And the first side of G'n'R's 'Lies' of course.

I thought Ummagumma too - showing my age there. But since it's only half live, how about?

I was going to say Queen's Live Killers, not as over engineered as the Live Magic album.

Good shout on the Big Country album.

Has Flashy been on to mention Thunder "Live" yet? Still the best British band I've seen live

Didn't include this as I'm not sure it came out on vinyl, but hey.
It has the worst cover ever but it absolutely rocks.
Thing is i hate Hawkwind, all that cold on the edge of time crap.
I was even there when they recorded this but left early as i hated them so much. 😥

Was Live at Leeds a double? AFAICR it was a gatefold but not sure if it was just one record. CD reissue had a load more stuff on it anyway, so it counts for me. The bass sound... oof.

And It's Alive, and Live & Dangerous of course.

Thunder are indeed the finest live band, mctd, but I've never felt that their live recordings really capture the quality.

After all, you can't see Danny dancing!

Not a double, but a damn fine album nonetheless (saw them perform this at Aston Villa Leisure Centre of all places circa 1991).

101 by DM.

I can't quite get my head round the fact that come March, it will be the 25th anniversary of this sublime piece of work. Seems like yesterday.

Best live double album? Whitesnake - live in the heart of the city.

Absolutely sublime blues rock. It's a bittersweet experience listening to it though. You wonder, completely baffled, how they managed to go from this to churning out the absolutely bloody god-awful hair-rock shite they we're responsible for vomiting out in the 80's, complete with the most cringeworthy videos known to man

Can't understand why people like metallica when slayer are so much better.

In some parallel universe, certainly not the one I inhabit.
Back to live albums; Lizzy, Live and Dangerous, Purple, Made In Japan, Zeppelin, The Song Remains The Same. (Got an original movie poster for this tucked away somewhere, goes for around £4-500). 😀

Double album? Just shows a lack of stamina

I love this one though:

"official bootleg" of their last ever show, which was the best gig I've ever been to. Actually quite ropey when you listen to it, but very live 😉

Another vote here for Live Killers (Queen) - absolutely my favourite Queen album.

Also +1 for Stop Making Sense, if it qualifies as a double album - I know it was reissued a few years back in an expanded version, but I've a feeling it was a single originally?

I'm going to upset a few people, The Song Remains The Same isn't a live album, redubbed from studio and rehearsal room.
The BBC tapes are live (and very good, Thank You is monumental.)although theres only John Peel and a few others there.

DP Made in Japan, good althoughI'd go for In Concert
