Currently using Creative EP630 phones with a c-moy headphone amp and a Sandisk 20gb Fuze player. current phones are deep and quite bassy, as the expense of a little clarity. The external amp goes some way in clearing things up, tightening the bass and giving me some volume, but they just seem a bit muddy for vocals.
Any suggestions? Was looking at some cheap Shure phones but they feel quite plasticky and I don't think the flex is particularly strong - not up to being chucked in a coat pocket or bag! Like the look and reviews of some Etymotic but prices are too much for me right now.
The other option is wait a bit and get some over ear Sennheisers, which will sound fantastic with the external amp, but not be quite so portable.
Senheisser CX300s (or close on that number anyway).
People here swear by them for their personal <insert fave media player here>. Apparently they block out a lot of the outside world, but do require de-waxing once a month.
But that might just be because he is french.
I've got Sennheiser CX330's, and they're ok, but Ultimate Ears do buds starting at £25ish, but they're tricky to find, but by far the best buds I've found for the money are Denon AH-C252's. Picked up a pair for backup as my Ultimate Ears Superfi's have got to go back to the States after the cable broke. The Denons cost £24.99, and are brilliant. Quite clear and detailed, bass is well controlled and not overwhelming. I'm using them with a mic adaptor on my iPhone with songs ripped at 320kb. I'm seriously impressed, they're not far off the UE's sound wise, but the UE's cost me $124!
ive been looking at the sennheiser 300s on play.com.
black ones are £30, and white ones a tenner!!
is the only difference the colour??
They look similar on the outside...so they are going to sound the same? 🙄
FWIW I tried shures and was underimpressed.
SEP watch out for fake CX300s though an unpopular colour may be cheap 🙂
i assume theyll be genuine on play.com tho yep?
if so ill prob get a set of white uns 🙂
Nobody buys white ones cos they attract too much attention. White=iPod=mugging. The Denons I bought are white ones, because, oddly enough, that's all the shop had left in stock. Get the Denons, they really are far, far better than the CX300's, and cheaper. The Denons are quite a bit bigger than the CX's, so they have bigger drivers and better overall sound quality. I've also got a pair of Etymotic ER6i's with custom fit eartips, and the Denons at £25 wee in the 'motic's shoes, and they are around £150!
where can you get the denons for that price?
Them Denon's, and loads of other types here
I bought mine from a hifi shop on Park Street in Bristol, Audio Xcellence I think, but £24.99 is the RRP anyway.
Are they any good for staying in whilst running/cycling etc?
The one I have (standard iPod ones) are a bit rubbish for that.
Standard earbuds are rubbish period. Proper in-ear buds like the Denons stay in place because the bud part fits into the ear canal and seals it, so they will only pull out if you yank on the cable. They can be made more secure bu running the cable up over the top of your ear and down the back, which makes them less likely to pull out. It's also worth moistening the buds before putting them in your ears as it helps seal them. I just lick mine.
There's a technique to putting them in. Use yo0ur right hand, reach over your head and pull the top of your your ear upwards. While pulling, place the earbud inside your ear and let the rubber expand a little. Release your ear and you'll feel the earbud "gripped" much better than just pushing it in. Repeat for other ear.
(This is for ear-canal type ear buds, not stnadard in-ear phones)
