Thinking of returning to Uni to train as a Chartered Surveyor. I have always been fascinated by construction and working drawings and like the idea of a creative role which also offers the chance for career progression and competitive salary.

Not really sure the best way to go about it though. Would it be advisable to undertake a placement (voluntary) before going to a Uni course? Also a little confused by the multitude of roles on offer.

Would like to hear the advice of anyone who is in the industry and their thoughts.

I'm a QS. I never bothered getting chartered the RICS is a money grab outfit IMO and don't really offer much.

I changed to a different career but the degree was handy. I personally got fed up with counting spreadsheets on spreadsheets.

Now I do colouring in for a living :-)...special STW discounts available 😉

Currently doing my degree in Urban Land Economics at Sheffield Hallam. Done 2 years, and now working in Leicester for a year on my placement year.

Basically i'm training to be a chartered surveyor, sounds like what you want to study is building surveying. What i'm doing is commercial property management/investment/landlord and tenant issues/valuations/agency etc...
Sheffield Hallam is good for these types of courses, high up in the rankings in terms of job prospects at end of degree as well.

I would try and get a little experience before you start your degree. Maybe try and work with a firm part time, and then work at uni part time. Loads of courses like that available. Try and get on a course which offers you a chance to take a sandwitch year, if you are able to get a job it will help you so much!

Hope this helps. Have a look at loads of unis through, there all good in their own way. I know Nottingham Trent is very good for construction etc...
