After writing a couple of brief mountain trip reports on here (which are a much more enjoyable way to spend a work related train journey than actually doing work 🙂 ), I've since had a look on my laptop and since August alone i've got a shed load of other "adventures".

At the suggestion of druidh, I'm going to start uploading the pics and reports to some sort of blog, certainly beats having them just sitting on my laptop, rarely revisited.

I already have a domain and set up a blog a while back, but to be honest, the format of a blog isn't exactly what i'm looking for (although my knowledge of this area of social media is pretty limited!).

Rather than having a date related "diary" structure being the main layout, I'd prefer to have a site/blog I can split into distinct sections (being my main interest areas), e.g. mountain trip reports, outdoor kit reviews, bike builds, biking adventures, forex trading etc.

But I still like the idea of having a diary type part to the main page where I can update re general stuff and upcoming trips etc.

Is there anything (preferably free) out there that provides this sort of structure? I'm keen to avoid designing my own site, mainly because I know it will look rubbish 🙂

Wordpress again, you can set up a diary type blog on the main page, then separate pages for stuff you want to show long term.

Take a look here for ours: http://sussexmuddyarse.wordpress.com/

wordpress.com is hosted by 'them', so they sort out the backups, its a bit simpler and harder to mess up.

wordpress.org is self-hosted by the user, so no auto backups, more flexibility as security is not such an issue when there are thousands of blogs on a shared hosting service. Check to see if your current host supports wordpress.

What about blogger.com? I follow others that use that and have created a profile but that's it.

What Spooky said. I re-did my website a few months ago using Wordpress and found it to be pretty easy and the results look fairly good.

thanks guys, wordpress looks like it should do everything i need it to 🙂

my domain name is registered to 123-reg. They offer pretty cheap hosting (£2.50 per month) which allows simple installation of the Wordpress app.

Is this an effective way of getting up and running?

peterfile - 123-reg should be fine for it if you use the free app installer they have. You need to pay a year up front on the starter package but that's still only 30 quid. You get a load of free email addresses to use as well with your domain. More than adequate but keep an eye on the security of your wordpress install as bugs crop up from time to time and you should never rely on your host for patching.

Thats sounds fine if they say it supports Wordpress - (you need PHP and MySQL support). I think I pay about £5 a month but the first year was free. I have about 10gb of space which is plenty I think. You can usually upgrade your package if you find you need more features.

thanks atlaz.

just looking at the wordpress site at the moment, which seems to offer free hosting.

Can I just use that instead and direct my domain name to the wordpress address (which is how my current, and empty, blog account is set up)

EDIT: ah wait, the free package is pretty limited on wordpress, looks like 123 hosting might be more much more flexible

I think if you use wordpress hosting, you need to have a 'wordpress' domain name. You can't just choose one.

Like others have said wordpress will do what you want (self hosted not Wordpress.com)

I have a traditional blog bit, then pages with bike route , trip reports etc.

I used Blogger and just created pages which weren't in that "diary" format. Have a look at the Archive section
